Shotgun tek, couple questions
    #9091601 - 10/17/08 12:55 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Ok so Im fruiting a bunch of cakes with a shotgun terrarium. I know my RH is supposed to be pretty decent with just 70% ambient RH and a layer of moist perlite but I keep an ultrasonic humidifier going sometimes and I seem to get better results by running it than I do by trusting the perlite. The problem is that it soaks the hell out of the space it's in and I think its definitely inviting contams. With the humidifier going the space around my tub becomes clouded with moisture and everything starts to drip, without it there is just mild condensation on the lid of the terrarium.  What exactly does 99% RH look like?

Also..
2 of my cakes arent fruiting or showing myc growth onto the vermiculite coating like the others. I noticed when I dunked them that they were more densely colonized than the others and seemed to have slightly yellowed spots. Since they smelled mushroomy like my other cakes I assumed they were good to go but I really havent seen any progress out of them.

Thanks!

99% looks like 4% more than the 95% pictured below.

If you have 70% ambient humidity in your room and you followed the shotgun terrarium tek, you don't need to run the ultrasonic in the room.

Thanks RR!

Anyone have any ideas on why those 2 cakes are stunted or how to get them into fruiting mode?

Some of them can take more time than others, also genetics sometimes does not allow for a fruiting cake.

What kind of cacti is that in your sig/avatar? its just amazing!

Common name is buddha's temple its from genus crassula. I dont have one but I want one!

Do you think my cakes could be stalled from having to fight  and beat out contams during colonization?

It can be hard to tell by just look at RR picture. Only thing I can add to thats is feel. I personally can feel humity a difference that feels like a slight pressure maybe. You can feel this when you place your dry hand into the very high humity enviroment . I live where it is dry so you can feel the humity diference between the room and box. The air smells thicker to me also. Maybe i have super powers, but they just want to get me into trouble. Try to use all your sences and after time you will notice the differences. Keep things clean and avoid tasting your box to check humity.  RR hydrometer looks just like the one I have in my cigar humidor. So that is were it went. you can also see the condensation one the walls when humity is high.

For the umpteen millionth time, condensation is not an indication of humidity.

Condensation is caused by a diffirential in temp between the inside and outside. Your fruiting chamber is slightly warmer than the outside if you have condensation.

RR posted a pic of a shotgun FC with 95% humidity, no condensation.

Wally world has a gigital therm/hygrometer for $6.47 in the hardware dept.  It will tell you the humidity +/- 1% and temp +/- 2 degrees F.  If you can read numbers, you should be able to determine you humidity with one of them.  I have spent too much time dulling my senses to rely on them to detect RH accurately.  Good luck!

its crazy how many people forget this from school. i remember a teacher in grade school put a glass of ice water out on a table for the duration of class and at the end asked how the water got on the outside of the glass.

yeah I think I will stop by and grab a hygrometer I need to pick up some gloves for a glove box im building, too. thanks for the tip.

really the reason i was asking what it looks like is cause when i run the humidifier the entire enclosure that the terrarium is in gets foggy like a rainforest.

you dont need the ultrasonic, if your ambient rh is truelly 70% a properly made shotty fc will easily maintain 99% rh. mist then fan 5 times daily. more if you like they love fae.
