whats happening
    #9096125 - 10/18/08 01:07 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I am growing for my first time, and my terrarium is the right temperature and the right humidity. recently though some of the mushrooms have been turning black and looking all fucked up. It doesnt really look bacterial or anything, my theory is that they are getting wet or something. What do you guys make of it?

1.) Contaminated
2.) Wet...Which causes rot.
3.) They may be drying out due to lack of water...I kind of made that up, but it's possible.

Pictures would help. Nobody can really give you an honest answer without seeing it.

unfortunately I dont have acces to a digital camera, but I will do my best to describe my situation. I am doing a variation on the poor mans pod. I am using two water pumps connected to three bubblewands in a 60 gallon rubbermaid. One of the water pumps is connected to two bubble wands and is placed inside the terrarium to recirculate humidified air and really humidfy it, while the other pump is connected to one bubble wand outside the terrarium to provide air exchange. It certainly seems humid enough, water is condensating on the sides and top of it, and I would thing air exchange is sufficient as well, with the two holes on the top. I also have two submersible heaters in the bottom of it as well. It seems to be the proper temperature and humidity, but recently a whole cluster of mushrooms and a couple other ones have turned black, a very unsettling sight. I noticed that most of the ones turning black are near the bottom of the cakes, which makes me think the water level might be too high and they are getting wet. I dont think the cake is infected or anything, because there are a couple of healthy looking mushrooms on the same cake. What do you all think?

Sounds like they are getting wet...A contaminated shroom is pretty obvious. For example, a contaminate will cover the surface of the shroom, but rot will not really add a later...It will more or less eat the mushroom if that makes any sense. I'm doing my best to describe it, but I'm not too good at it.

Without pictures people can only guess. Mushrooms can turn blackish when they get spores on them or when they get Bacterial Blotch (pseudomona). Its really hard to guess at this even a cheap camera phone might work.

Pseudomona:

Or it can be spores on the cap like so:
