just a couple of questions about using coir as substrate. when adding a brick of coir  one gallon of water at 170 deg. do i break the brick apart first  or just dump the water on top of brick? also i coudnt find gypsum so i bought a bag of "wiggle worm soil builder non toxic earthworm castings" the n-p-k is 1-0-0  is this enough nitrogen for the coir ? plan on adding about 3 to 3 1/2 cups per brick  (roughly 10 % )

I just put the brick in...It breaks apart itself.

As for the other stuff I really don't use anything other than maybe some gypsum, and have used worm castings only a couple of times...So, I can't really answer you there, but it sounds like you are on the right track.

Someone will clear this up who has more experience with these different mixings.

thanks i want to use something to give enough nitrogen ive never used coir but from what ive been reading its sounds like best results are gained by adding some form of nitrogen  thats why the stuff i bought 1-0-0 makes me wonder if this is enough nitrogen  couldnt find gypsum

1 brick expands to 7 quarts. that doesn't answer your question but should help you guess..

It depends on the brand you have. It should say on the package...Mine says 1 brick for 7-8 liters of substrate.

Check this calculator out...It's a spawn calculator, pretty nifty.

When I put my brick in with the boiling water the brick just grew like one of those 4th of july snakes... it was quite entertaining. Next time I am going to break it in two so I have two snakes. If you plan on doing gypsum make it a little more dry because gypsum clumps up when it touches water, I believe.
