Dry Substrate or Bad Spores?

Hi Shroomers, I am new at this so please forgive my ignorance on this subject. I have recently prepared 5 half pint mason jars with brown rice flour and vermiculite as directed by the pf tek method. It has been 1 week and there is no signs of mycelium growth. It appears that the substrate is getting dry. Should I wait a little longer? Is there any way of moistening the substrate without compromising the sterility of my jars? I also realize that there could be a problem with my spores. I ordered them from Sporestore.com. Does anyone know about this companys reputation? Please help! Thanx

Jusr wait a bit more. It might take about ten days to see growth. When you are new to it hard to reconize your growth until you see it a few times. waiting is a better word for this hobby than growing. They grow when they want, it is in there DNA. I herd the spore is a very hard natural substance that might be strong enough to surive space. So it might take a while to break down. We need a spore enzyme for a faster production. Do they make that? Space spores sound fun, we sould try ro corner that market and take this place over. They use us to talk to each other on other planets. Give spores the respect they deserve and wait. Space Spore. i like the sound of that, think about it while you are waiting.

Order from sponsors. If you order from a sponsor, you will no longer even wonder: 'bad spores?'. If they are indeed bad, you'll get your money back or a bunch more spores for free. But: they wont be bad.
Leave your jars somewhere between 60-80 degrees F in the dark. Don't look at them for two weeks.
They're trying to have sexy time, don't keep peeking and ruining it.

What do you mean by this? Wait a little longer to birth them? Bad idea, but I'm not saying that was what you meant. Wait a little longer to throw them out? Bad idea, let them have their way with that food. Don't throw em away until its been at least a month or you've got some serious colors growing.
Good luck!

60 degrees F is too cold.
Room temp...like 72 degrees F or so, is fine.
I like 81 degrees F for colonizing pf jars...
I can colonize them the fastest at this temp.

I had my first pf tek jars incubating at 80 degrees, and it still took 2 weeks before I saw mycelium growth. PF Tek for it's ease is long, and arduous. Your best bet is leave them alone for a week or two, and then check them. If your anything like me the first time I had jars I was checking them 6, or 7 times a day.
