The Journey To The East by Herman Hesse
    #909501 - 09/26/02 10:54 AM (22 years, 4 months ago)

I just got done reading  "The Journey To The East" by Herman Hesse(1956) . I set out to find this book, because it had been talked about in "Storming Heaven: LSD and the American Dream" by Jay Stevens. Stevens said that guys like The Pranksters and the Leary group really loved that book, and thought that Hesse was, even if he didn't know it, describing a psychedelic experience. I think I see what they meant.

The book is about a secret society who travel through time and space, meeting historical figures and whatnot. They're always on a journey to the east, but it's not clear to me what that means. The group ends up splitting up, after they can't come to an agreement about what their mission is. Then the main charactor "H.H." discovers that it wasn't the journey that failed him, but he who failed the journey. He eventually finds out that many of the things that he has done have been a test.

I'm not sure what to make of this book quite yet. I think i'm going to need to read it again. When I read it, it seemed as though I knew what was going on, but now that i'm trying to describe it, it's very difficult. Actually, that's part of the book as well. Different people try to describe what the group experienced, and every one comes up with something a little different(much like a psychedelic experience). Well, even though I can't explain what happened very well, I did enjoy reading it.

Has anyone else read this book?

I haven't read this book yet. Haven't been able to get it around here. I have read Most of Hesse's other works and I love them all. Journey is also mentioned in The Electric Koolaid Acid Test. Kesey talked about Hesse often.

Siddhartha is a fantastic book.

They made a film of it that I saw this summer that I was really impressed by. The director did a really good job with editing and pace that made the story come to life beautifully on screen. He made the environment come alive, and made some pretty bold choices given the text of the book. Anyone who liked the novel should check out the movie.

Plus, the woman who plays kamala is pretty hot.
