Garden Soil for Casing Topping?

My local hardware store was out of vermiculite but I do have an unopened 40lb bag of this stuff sitting in the garage -> garden soil (edit, looks like it ate my link, so here it is again)
Is there any reason why I couldnt PC a couple jars of this stuff to use instead of vermic?

That stuff is not recomended for potting. My guess is that it is too rich of a mix to be place where the acids can build up. the potting mix that company makes is very heavy with( peat)and a pinch of pelite. I when used by itself I find even my plant have a hard time pushing small new roots in that stuff and would not use with out perlite and vermiculite. I logic is: if it is not recomended for containers, and too thick to promote the root growth of a plant (works best for already rooted plants ), then it might not be the best casing layer to chose. You can produce cubes with out a casing. Just treat it more like a cake. it should still work.

if you are using "mostly" rye, you might want to use a casing layer. The issue being you do not want any exposed grain at the top of your trays. so if you are spawning rye to bulk coir yould want to mix the colonized rye in the coir the cover the top of the mix with a layer of straight coir. grains exposed to nonfilter'd air, in any situation, is asking for contams.

you dont want to pressure cook the casing anyways, you want to pasteurize it

I assume you mean uncolonized grains correct?
As of right now my plan is to prepare a bunch of rye jars and once they are colonized convert into casings. I don't have anything to spawn them too so as far as I know (been reading as much as I can) I just need to put a casing layer over top of the rye once I've transferred it into my casing trays.
My budget is pretty tight at the moment so anything that saves me money is a good thing. I just happen to have a bag of that garden soil (fresh bag, unopened) leftover from last years gardening.

Go to the pet store and grab some coco coir bricks, bed-a-beast brand or whatever they have. Coir is perfectly fine to put your spawn in and then you don't have to case. You want to case if you just use the rye spawn but if you do a bulk substrate I was told I don't have to case. So get some coir and your good to go. Oatman2000 has proved that straight coir works just fine. With the garden soil it seems just like a hassle. You would be best off doing peat moss, vermiculite, lime, gypsum 50/50+ casing layer or coir/vermiculite but you cannot get vermiculite.
Also did you check any larger size nurseries? Do you have any grain stores in your area? Check the phone book for nurseries, farm stores, grain stores, or maybe a "dodge" (I have noticed a lot of feed, grain, farm stores have DODGE in their name somewhere) feed store. They will usually have everything you need. Places like Loews, Home Depot, Wal-Mart don't compare very well to such specialty stores.
