so i cased some substrate and put into fruiting. i see puff balls of mycelium poking threw the casing layer rather evenly. i want to see a very up close pic of knotting because i use phone internet and most pics i search for are not clear on the phone. if they were only closer! can anyone help me with some pics or a very descriptive write out about how these puffballs will knot up?

So-called puff balls are not hyphal knots, but malformed mushroom tissue. Hyphal knots, which are about 1/16" or 1 mm in diameter can easily be seen on this money, since they're right on the surface. They're the tiny white 'dots' next to the mushrooms. They're the knots forming for second flush.
In fact, you can see the transition from hyphal knot to primordia to pinhead in this picture. RR

oooo a verbal description and picture! thanks for helping with my simple question Roger! I see what to look for now. I hope i see knots soon because my casing layer is about 40 percent colonized. i know im hiting it with proper pining triggers. its only been been five days so no worrries.

RogerRabbit,
I have yet to see hyphal knots in my casings. I guess they're just covered up by the casing layer? I have not had problems with contams in my FC do you think I could allow the substrate to recolonize without a casing layer and then add it later? So I can get a look at what's going on underneath?

Wasting stuff is good for the soul. I'm still pissed that my box of Cuban cigars never fruited. At least they got wasted trying. RR

WHAT!? I looked at all of RR's photos and I didn't see any white widow substrate. Are you being serious? The money was wasteful enough, but that's just money.
