hey, heres a dumb question but no one explains it anywhere...
do i fruit the cakes right side up (as in the same orientation that they were incubated in)? Is the vermiculate layer that i scraped off supposed to be the top of the cake?
or should it be upside down?

I've found that tilting the cake about 27 degrees leaning due south works best. Ideally at 357 feet above sea level.
Doesn't really matter, but the top during colonization is more likely to be a flatter and slightly wider surface vs the bottom where the jar curves in, so verm side down has a bit more stability for when shrooms start growing out of the sides. I use the taller, thinner 1/2 pint, but probably not much of a difference for the wide/short jars.

well of my 6 cakes.. only one has done anything, and it has happened verm side down
so my question is... should i flip the rest of my cakes? or just leave them be?
will it hurt the shrooms to grow on the bottom?

are your cakes on a wire mesh or something vs a solid base?
shrooms can grow out of any area of the cake that has: fresh air proper humidity some light
I might not understand what's really going on - can you post a pic?

they are on a somewhat solid base.. im using a gay ass mycodome, so its this plastic tray with holes in it which sits on the LECA(light expanded clay aggregate) which provides humidity... the LECA is wet and has an air pump running under it
anyway, should i suspend them cakes in the air? some cris angel shit?

are the shrooms growing out the the bottom face that "looks" down or are they growing from the lower part of the sides? growing from the lower part of the sides could indicate humidity is adequate at the base level, but not as good at the top part of the cake.

the shrooms ARE growing out the the bottom face that "looks" down..
(not the low end of the cake)
imagine the shrooms doing a pushup with the cake... that is what my high ass went to find 15 minutes ago

no matter which way you put them they will come out of the bottom. more moisture. I usually flip them over from how they were in the jar. I always get my monsters from the bottom. If your using perlite... there is simply more moisture at the base.

that tells me the conditions at the bottom of the cake are good enough (not necessarily ideal) but the rest of the cake is not. since the humidity and fresh air are coming from the bottom, I'd guess they're not getting high enough (pun intended...) to help the sides and top of the cake.
I'd think if you flipped the cake, the growing shrooms would start to die and you'd get pins starting from the new bottom that used to be the top, but I have no experience with that, so you might want to hold off until a more experienced member comes along.

If you have a good humidifier there should be a mist in the FC. Similar to fog. Dont worry about it. cakes r cakes. The more experimenting you try the better you will get at cultivation. Not every tek works for every person. Try several. Til your satsified. The first time I tried wbs I got contams in every jar PCed them for 1.5 hours. Now I have fully colonized WBS jars in 15 days using multispore. with 0 contams. I experimented with different teks.

www.mushroomvideos.com explains this i believe. it also tells why they grow from the bottom of the jars... more carbon down there.
