when is my rye jar ready to mix with compost
    #9086022 - 10/16/08 11:14 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I recently took a mycillial sample and made a liquid culture for the first time. I made the jars with the self healing injection points. All turned out well except I should have, and will in the future put a coffee filter over the top, even though I used the tyvek for a filter. Because
ants found there way in in-between the tyvek and injection points small gap and seem to have contaminated the culture. There were no signs of contam. in the liquid culture, and I put it in the fridge as soon as I noticed ants, but now that im growing out on rye I see a couple areas that look to me like a black mold [ill try to take a picture tonight]. Hopefully Im wrong, but mostly seems very healthy. Ive been shaking every day and things seem to be going along nicely.

My main question is.... everytime I shake the jars they dont seem as rich a white anymore because the myc breaks up, which is the purpose of shaking, but how do you know when to birth the jars into the compost. Will they ultimately be rich white even after shaking or what?

Thanks in advance.

First, if there's anything suspect in your jars, post a pic and definitely do not spawn those jars unless you're 100% sure it's not contaminated. Any contam spores in the jars will most likely fly everywhere when you pour it out and possibly infect any nearby projects or worse...

Typically ime when the outside is fully colonized, the inside is as well.  Before I shake my jars, I slowly rotate them top to bottom so I can get a good look at the inner areas to see if it's colonized or contaminated. I shake at 30ish then 70ish %. After it's 100% outside, I give it another slow turn bottom over top to make sure the inner areas look good. If so, I wait a couple days to make absolutely sure and spawn.

one good thing my friend does when he has many jars colonizing is he will shake them after they are colonized, let them recover for a day or 2, then shake again. this helps IMO because if you have contams the mycellium won't recover quickly, if at all, so it is kind of one last check (before the open up and smell check immediately prior to spawning)

one thing you mentioned did set an alarm off, though. if you're using tyvek it should be ON TOP of your jar lid. i'm not sure how you would make self healing ports work with tyvek, unless you were making a small tyvek patch that isn't attached to the port. my advice, to avoid ants or whatever, contams in general, is to just inject through the tyvek and then cover the hole with a double or triple layer of alcohol soaked micropore tape. if ants can get in, bacteria and mold spores could easily get in. it needs to be sealed, and coffee filters are pointless. it's like trying to catch fleas with a fishing net.

my suggestion to you would be switch to polyfil if you're using injection ports. or find syringe filters, but i think they can get pricey, at least compared to polyfil. you just gotta make sure you can see the entire surface area on top of the lid. if you have tyvek underneath a lid with a port and a vent hole, the tyvek has a hole as soon as you inject. polyfil you will just have your port on your lid, across from a hole stuffed with your filter, all one piece.

shit, i'm rambling. good luck

Thanks for your help guys, as for my LC Jars. I have the tyvek on top, and i cut a small circular hole around my injection port, which if i was going to do this I see i should have sealed this gap as well with silicon.... I will either do this or try my hand at the polyfil next time.
