Is there such this as TOO MUCH FAE??
    #9090815 - 10/17/08 09:39 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I have a martha setup w/ a coolmist running 15min on/1 hour off.  I am able to keep the humidity at ~90% after the on period, and it drops to around ~79% right before it gets boosted again.  I am seeing an even break of the casing layer, with nice splotches of white everywhere and what looks like an early morning frosting from the ultra-tiny beads of moisture on the mycelium (I have read this is good, any opinions to the contrary?).

My question is can I by chance be having too much FAE?  Is this even possible?  My setup includes an external floor fan that is pointed toward the martha, it is insync with the timer that controls the coolmist, so I'm blowing air through the cloth zipper (not directly into the greenhouse) which stirs things around a little bit every hour while its being misted.  Does this sound reasonable?

i believe the only downsides to too much fae is that it can dry out your trays and can lower rH. As long as you can prevent these two things from happening, get as much fae as you possibly can.

Just think of the conditions it would be receiving in the wild ? It would be surrounded by fresh air... Personally I would just run that humidifier 24/7. Do you have the humidifier rigged up on the outside with a tube running from it, to the Martha ?

Yes it is connected with a 1/2"ID pvc braided high pressure hose.  The coolmist is on a shelf above the martha and the hose runs up and then curves down to eliminate a lot of drip into the martha.  I know of the damage these hoses can cause to the coolmists because of back pressue i guess??

I was thinking about constructing a condensing chamber by taking a sealed bucket and attaching a computer fan to the top with a large 2" hose (same size as the output on the coolmist) running from the coolmist to the top of the bucket.  Then running the 1/2" hose from the near-bottom of the bucket to the martha.  I would also install a plastic spigot to aid in water removal.  I even thought about combining this idea with the DIY magnetic stir plate as well.  Using the computer fan on top of the bucket with magnet attached and putting my LCs up on top.  I don't know the specs of a computer fan though, I would have to find one w/ both sides exposed bc the air flow has to go down and the magnet has to be on top.

Note that the humidifier pumping the mist in brings FAE too.

I have a set-up similiar to yours and get great hunidity and 6 air exchanges per hour .

As stated , you can't get too much FAE as long as humidity and all is staying where you want it .

In the wild, mushrooms pop up everywhere in the fog after a rain.  That means unlimited fresh air, with 100% humidity.  Try to achieve that and you'll be golden.  I have for many years railed against piping from a humidifier to a greenhouse, so I won't repeat that again here.  Do what you need to do to keep near saturation humidity with lots of fresh air.  Provided you can keep the humidity high, there is no such thing as too much fresh air, since fresh air is the number 1 pinning trigger for mushrooms.

Thanks RR, HippieCHick, and Boris.  How do I know how frequently i am achieve 100% FAE within my martha?  This question is mainly directed at HippieChick bc I see that she knows that she achieves 6 FAE/hour.
