Use Rye to inoculate Cakes?
    #9089115 - 10/16/08 10:05 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Is there any reason why I couldnt use a bit of colonized rye to inoculate pf tek cake jars?

Has anybody tried this? what was the result?

Thanks in advance for any advice/info :-D

Typically you would use colonized rye to colonize more sterile rye jars. I imagine you could do this with PF Tek, however....there is usually dry vermiculite on top of the BRF. So it would be pointless IMHO to dump some colinized grain on top of the cake. Unless you didn't use the dry verm, but then your running into the issue of possible contams.

I would just use my rye to colonize more rye.

Agreed just spawn to more grain. Rye to BRF is pointless.

The reason I ask because I have a single rye jar and some upcoming pf jars. Thanks for the advice :-D

Im sure it would work, you have to be extremely sterile. Just because no one recommends it, try it anyways. Sure it will take longer to colonize then wbs or grain. But you dont fruit directly from wbs or grain. you spawn it.

Yea! You spawn it to compost or something like that! You dont spawn it to BRF!!!! Why would you say try it?? It just sounds absurd, with those brf jars coming, just nocc it up with some spores. Dont listen to this guy! Dont waste your BRF jars!!!!!

I grew a butt load of shiitake from rye berries + plug spawn by inoculating BRF+sawdust cakes a while back.  I order plug spawn and used that to inoculate a bunch more spawn.

I PCed without a dry verm layer and also PCed a jar of dry verm.  When I inoculated, I simply removed the lid of the BRF jars, sprinkled in rye + wood, and covered with dry verm.  It worked like a charm.

There's no point in doing a grain to grain transfer (in this case, rye to brf) if the recipient is a cake. You can not shake a cake jar up to evenly spread the mycellium throughout. Just use a spore syringe.

You do grain to grain to jars of grain, because once done, you can shake the jar well and distribute the colonized bits throughout the jar, thus enabling a very fast colonization.

Putting grain to cake however, is not worth the risk of contamination, and even if it doesn't contaminate it just takes 2-3 days off of the germination period, then spreads as fast as a regular multispore inoculation. You don't shake cakes up, cakes have a dry verm layer anyways so shaking them up would be mixing contaminant spores with the clean substrate.... not that it's the right consistancy to be shakeable in the first place. Yaddada?

edit: btw especially if you are using a home-made spore syringe, just inoc a cake with teh spores so that it colonizes pure. If using a 4oz cake you will have it colonized in a week, then crumble the cfake up and use IT to inoculate grain jars. If you want even faster colonization, just noc up a shotglass of brf/verm mix. Or a ton of them. Don't forget to rid of the dry verm layer prior to transfer, and keep it out of the transfer.

Why would you just not spawn the rye berries and dowels to more grain??? Why would you do all that work?? I buy dowels all the time and create more spawn with them, but it just makes sense to spawn them to grain! I was not saying that spawning them to BRF cakes is not possible, its just not the best thing to do with grain spawn!!!
