my 2 cents....

I just wanted to bring up the topic of whether or not to allow your innoc jars be exposed to light or not...
I have read all over the site that some say it dont matter, and some say to keep it in the dark.
I innoced 15 jars 2 days ago with LC that I made... of the 15 jars, 7 were in the dark, and 8 were exposed to light for atleast 20 hours.
The temp. was kept between 78-80F.
The jars that were kept in the dark already have a strong mycil growth going inside. The jars that were kept in the light show no signs of mycil growth yet.
So, for me from now on I will be keeping my jars in the dark. It seems like when I expose them to light they stall. I have 3 pint size jars going now and theyve slowed once they were exposed to light.
Just my 2 cents guys. I know some will disagree, but As I am new myself I just wanted to let you know what Ive noticed.
of the 15 jars, 6 were 4oz jars the rest were 1/2 pint.

I would say that, in order for it germinate, it needs darkness. When i first inoculate my grain jars, i always give them at least 4 days.. And like clockwork, if i haven't peeked and let any light in they will all be a bit fuzzy! But if i can't take it and look, they usually take a day or 2 longer...
I have never tried to let them go all the way in the light, but i make it a habit to check on them every few days, which i haven't noticed any slowing.. Then again, i have never ran a controlled experiment.
Everyone says that they do better in total darkness, and i tend to agree!!
and thats my .02

Thats odd. My jars are always kept on a shelf that directly faces the fruiting area, meaning several bright ass flourescent bulbs are shining 12 hours a day. The 4oz brf jars take no longer than 9 or 10 days maximum from inoculation day, to be completely finished. Everything else is done grain to grain. Pint jars of grain are done in the same or lesser time window. No invitro pins at all, the only time i've had those was on the first set of jars, where i nocced up some 1pint brf jars andthey had pins invitro after a month.
edit: The jars arent' even incubated.... Just kept at room temperature, about 71F average.

=) likewise... total darkness has been much better for me. thats the route I will be going... I can go without looking, but since I am new... I been checking on them every morning/night just to see if i had any growth. Tonight marks exaclty 48 hours on the 15 jars....
cheers!

nah, its being done in a closet... i have 3 seperate gauges reading my temp. all read the same within a degree or 2. the lowest was 78 and the highest was 80.... highly unlikey that caused it.

LIGHT DOES NOT MATTER DURING GROWTH OF SPAWN OR CAKES..
please stop spreading disinformation people.. and remember
LIGHT ONLY MATTERS WHEN YOU ARE FRUITING!
LIGHT ONLY MATTERS WHEN YOU ARE FRUITING!
LIGHT ONLY MATTERS WHEN YOU ARE FRUITING!
