Have you grown... Inonotus obliquus, Fomes fomentarius, Phellinus igniarius??
    #9088815 - 10/16/08 09:15 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I enjoy being able to ignite my campfires with flint, steel, and tinder fungi. Anybody ever grown any of these? They're hard to find in my area due to most likely pollution levels. If I go North (rarely, but would love more escapes) I can find them. I'd like to inoculate some Birch logs and/or other hosts. They're also good species for you guys to remember in your minds. Never know when you'll be caught in a blizzard without matches!

Inonotus obliquus
Fomes fomentarius
Fomes igniarius
Phellinus tremulae
Phellinus igniarius

Thanks all!

I've grown several species of Fomes, and they're easy but extremely slow, taking years to develop into usable size.  I'm sure if you can isolate a culture, you can grow them if your climate is acceptable.  They're not suited to indoor cultivation because they take so long, any substrate would be over ran with green molds before they could grow large enough to be usable.

Good to see a fellow Bushcrafter aboard.

Thanks man. Perhaps I'll just cut the dead birch trees down and bring the logs home with me next time...

Inonotus olbliquus is medicinal too. It would be rather wasteful to use it as fuel.

You're right that species is medicinal. I forgot about Siberian Chaga!

My mistake.
