Bird Seed "Cake"?
    #908805 - 09/26/02 02:03 AM (14 years, 7 months ago)

Anybody ever just dump a solid colonized pint of bird seed out of the jar & treat it like a PF cake?

I have tried that, and had less success than bluemeanie. The cake pinned like crazy, but 95% abhorted. The fruits that did mature, did not grow very big, and were sterile. Maybe it was the conditions, maybe it was the strain. I wont try it again.

LOL, what strain is what?

I was just thinking about doing it.

Strain could be EQ, B+, F+, Creeper, any of the Asian's and/or several others.

I have a few jars going. Actualy, a few to many.

Oh, I was replying to Drummer.  He said he tried it but got all aborts.  He mentioned that it might have been the strain and I was wondering what strain..

I did it and had a huge ass koh but only got one decent flush..reason being that seed does not absorb much water compared to its weight...I only got a second flush after dunking..Probably would of got one after evry dunk but it just was for the sake of science....

if you dumped it in a filter patch bag, what do you get? a mycobag =ergo, the birdseed cake should work in a fairly similar way

Yup, Mo.

I agree. It is not advanced cult. I just thought I would pose the question, here.

Trying to get an answer from an "old hand", rather than a young inexperianced one.

I have potted & top cased a whole solid bird seed cake, then bottom watered it (never misted) & came up with this. Not advanced either. But it was - quick - easy & simple.

I would think, just treating one like a cake, would not do well. That seem's to be the consensious. So, hell with it.

In a one gallon black plastic industrial type plant pot, I simply lined ther bottom & sides of the pot with EasyGardener brand landscape cloth. Which is a polyspun polyester fiber material, much like filter disks. You can find it online --- Home Depot & Lowes. A 3 X 50 roll is about $20. Any material that would "wick" water would ~~probobly~~ work.

I then placed some compost in the pot - deep enough that the top of a fully colonized solid pint of bird seed would sit on the compost -- so the top of it was about 1/2 inch below the top of the pot, them dropped in the solid bird seed pint.

Then, added some more compost around the edges, to fill the pot level with the top of the colonized bird seed.

Then, I simply covered  the top of everything -- in the pot with Coir, about level to the top of the pot.

I placed the pot in a 5 gallon clear rubbermaid tub, placed about 1/4 inch of water in the bottom of the tub, then inverted another clear rubbermaid -- the same size -- on the top of it -- to serve as a lid. It was left in natural light.

The temp was between 76 & 80 F. It was never misted. It was fanned a few times. The Coir colonized very quickly & pinned.

The fruits were not great big, but -- big enough.

If I do this again, I would break up the spawn & mix it into the substrate, so it would colonize the compost. I believe you would get bigger fruits. This would require a few more days for the compost to colonize. But, no big deal.

If you don't have "compost". I would think that any good dung/straw mix would also work -- l. Hell, as a last resort. Any real good grade of potting soil, like Scotts 3-N-1 would also suffice.

The fiber landscape cloth wicked water all the way to the top of the pot. So, the rh was almost perfect -- at all times. It was a toilet flush simple thing to do. It can be done -- quicker -- than it took me to write -- this.

6T

Mickey_Rourke, it was PESA, they tried cakes from both rye berries, and bird seed. Neither produced. They were thrown outside with some compost, they really took off then.
