Dream Journal
    #9067526 - 10/12/08 05:53 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

I have been thinking about starting a dream journal for a little while now.  How much does it actually help as far as remembering dreams?  If you wrote a dream down and a couple years go by and you read what you wrote down do you remember the dream vividly?  The reason I want to start a dream journal is to lucid dream, I am interested in lucid dreaming but have never actually had one, does a dream journal help bring about a lucid dream?  Any other hints on lucid dreaming and what has worked for everyone is much appreciated.

MODS: Don't know what forum this is supposed to go in, if it is wrong please feel free to change it.

This thread was moved from The Psychedelic Experience.

Reason:
Well I don't think this is the right forum for it but I'm not sure where you'd rather have me put it, the Pub, or the Physical and Mental Health and Well-Being forum. I think it actually might get a more fleshed out discussion in the latter.

As someone who taught myself how to have lucid dreams, I speak from experience when I say that keeping a dream journal is the first and most important step to developing the ability to achieve lucidity in the dream state. People dream EVERY night, they just don't typically remember it. Writing them down subconsciously signals to your brain that your dreams are important and that you want to remember them, and over time you will start to remember them on your own.

I should have told you to DAFS, but I'm a nice guy and so I'll tell you in a nice way. The internet is FULL of useful information about lucid dreaming. In fact, there are a handful of how-to websites that are completely devoted to teaching you how to have a lucid dream. Just google it.

Hope that helps,

Floyd

Have you had lucid dreams and remembered them without the use of a dream journal?

Thank you for your advice, that basically answered all my questions.  I have read internet sites about lucid dreaming which is why I was asking questions about the dream journal, I didn't know whether it was worth my time or not to start one, or if there was something better than a dream journal that someone here has figured out about.

Yes yes yes. A dream journal is an invaluable aid in the initial steps to remembering dreams and to lucid dreaming. I remember dreams I wrote into a  journal 25 years ago. I often don't remember what I dreamed last night however. Training concentration is key.

About three weeks ago I had the longest best and most beautiful lucid dream of my life.

Mmmmm...I would try keeping a journal for an extended period of time if I were you.  It's amazing how just writing a few words and phrases can bring about intense recall later, and call forth significant aspects of the unconscious.  Dreams and waking life are mutually interdependent.

Do you guys use pen & pad? I go off and on journaling dreams and the off is mostly due to my annoyance with how long it takes. I can't sleep with my computer on or else I'd just have Word set up & I could grab my wireless keyboard and just start typing....

Sucks, but I dunno what to do. I had a remarkable lucid dream this morning and I didn't write it down because it would have taken me 20 minutes, but I still remember it like it was real life.

The good thing about writing is it wrings out your memory. You can definitely remember LDs without writing, but you may remember way more if you do write it out.

I find that just spending some time right when I wake up recalling the events of my dreams works well. Even if you only remember a little bit, just giving it some thought can make other parts resurface. The point is to cultivate your brain's dream memory, so your brain forcuses and remembers dreams easily. Doing off and on recall will be like training to play basketball off and on, you probably wont get too far. But like I was saying, it doesnt have to take anywhere near 20 minutes. If you're in a hurry just take an extra minute to yourself in the shower every morning. The trick is to train your brain so you need to cultivate the habit.

I used a pen and pad when I kept one...I keep meaning to start again but I haven't for some reason.  If you're too tired to write out a long story, just write down key words and phrases...even two or three words can trigger great recall when re-read later IME!

You already do stuff in your dreams that affect your waking life and vice versa...you just might not recall it.  If you're talking about lucid dreaming, I've heard a large part of the process of learning how is being able to recall dreams, but I don't have much experience myself.

Dream Journals aren't vital to lucid dreaming, but they definitely help A LOT.  I don't use one, but I used to have one a while back.  It just gets your mind to be more focussed on the actual dreaming therefor you can remember them much easier.

The "secret" to lucid dreaming is the same as it is for lucid living; concentrating or being aware.

so what's the point of recalling it anyway?

Pray in the way you do, and write the things you feel lead to write - your on the right track - a track that many do not discover because they are too wrapped up in a world that is broadcast to them through society - instead of broadcasting to society what prophecy may bring.
Dreams are powerful and to those who are willing to accept responsibility for the visions that shape the world - they are monumental, essential, and crucial to change.
The expression of those dreams / visions is as crucial as your documentation! Never allow your dreams purpose to be compromised by evil or any other man or woman!
He Who Has An Ear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Atop the mountain / sea level, deep within the forest, or wherever it may be in Gods creation, in his name. You will be blessed as a conductor of good works! That is my dream - my vision - my hope. Peace!!!!!

thank you, your post gave form to my thoughts.

i am on my own path and dream journals or, in fact, many of the "by the rules" and cookie cutter stuff is meaningless to me. i walk on a path no one has never been on, where there are no rulebooks telling me how to behave or what to do and i can count only on my own mind to find a way through it.
