TRANSFERING CAKES
    #9086098 - 10/16/08 11:31 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I have read a few teks on here and I was wondering how careful you have to be when transferring cakes from jars to your chamber...air contamination>>>IS IT A REAL RISK AT THIS STAGE?>>>

Also, is it alright to be a little rough with transferring it (I know tapping the top is suggested in one tek, but how fragile are they?)?

-THANKS!-

The are tough...You don't have to worry about handling them, and breaking them. I have dropped mine before, and they didn't break.

You don't need to worry about a fully colonized cake getting contaminated. Once it has reached that stage it is pretty resistant to contamintes. The main one you watch out for it cobweb at this point IMO.

Cool, I'm pretty bad with that kind of thing.

I can't wait!

Expose your cakes to as much fresh air as possible with still keeping the humidity up. Failure to expose to air, will increase the risk of mold.  Making an air-tight fruiting chamber is unlikely to yield happy results, but very likely to get your grow contaminated and stalled at the same time.  The only time you want to disrupt FAE, is during colonization.

once the cakes are completely colonized, there is virtually no threat to any airborne contamination.  the mycelium, at that point, is so developed and has such a good grasp on the substrate that you should have absolutely no problems.

There is still a risk, but mostly if it's a still air environment for prolonged period of time.  Cobweb and other molds thrive in stale air, you dont see cobwebs in your backyard. This is why we keep elite filtration devices on colonizing jars (micropore, tyvek, dry verm layer etc..) to keep hungry intruders at bay. If molds enter the still air of your jar, they will win.
