That's not overlay, and chances are if you grow for ten years you'll never even see overlay.

Veda , there's a link to understanding WHAT overly,lol.

There's his confusion . The first two pic's in that link you sent him to aren't overlay . No wonder peeps are thinking they have overlay . That first pick looks like what I shoot for, lol.
Some of these older TEK's and info from years ago really needs to be upgraded .
RR, you tell me , does that first pic in that overlay section look even remotely like overlay ? Where's the yellow, hardened mat of mycelium that water can't penetrate?

I haven't even looked at it.  The whole overlay crap comes from a picture in Stamets' TMC that shows an apparently normal looking casing layer identified as overlay.  All I can assume is the publisher got the pictures mixed up, and folks have been freaking out over it ever since.

In addition, I've never seen one whit of good come from deep scratching.  It almost always leads to contamination, and I've never seen it result in an even pinset.  Just thought I'd toss that in.

Wait isn't overlay simply when the casing layer gets 100% colonized and can no longer serve as a casing layer? That's what i always thought it was.

Nope.  Overlay is matted, dry mycelium that is impervious to moisture.  The cells are dead or nearly dead, and can not support primordia formation.

Look at these pics for Useful links and you'll see the reason for all the confusion around here

according to these , everything I ever fruited was overlayed:grin:

Those need to be replaced with a real pic of overlay , if we can find one, lol.

Perhaps one of these trusted cultivators could purposely try to create some overlay, then take a few pics.

Terence McKenna Said:
"We have to create culture, don't watch TV, don't read magazines, don't even listen to NPR. Create your own roadshow. The nexus of space and time where you are now is the most immediate sector of your universe, and if you're worrying about Michael Jackson or Bill Clinton or somebody else, then you are disempowered, you're giving it all away to icons, icons which are maintained by an electronic media so that you want to dress like X or have lips like Y. This is shit-brained, this kind of thinking. That is all cultural diversion, and what is real is you and your friends and your associations, your highs, your orgasms, your hopes, your plans, your fears. And we are told 'no', we're unimportant, we're peripheral. 'Get a degree, get a job, get a this, get a that.' And then you're a player, you don't want to even play in that game. You want to reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash that's being manufactured out of the bones of a dying world."

RR,

I don't have much experience under my belt, but I have had some success with deep scratching.  When my mycelium that had broken the casing layer began to look flat and slimy, almost like dehydrated ice cream or cool whip, and water began to stand on these spots I thought that this was surely the overlay that I had heard about (dead, unresponsive to moisture).  So I experimented w/ a sterile fork and a light touch just to disturb the thinnest layer of mycelium possible.  Here are my results:

You can see the half of the casing on the front-left that was not scratched.  It still produced, just not nearly as much.  On the final picture the unscratched part is on the back-left.

I've been telling people this for years!~

Most of the time when people ask if they have overlay...

they have slightly or have definately over colonized their casing layer...

which is not overlay!~
