No definitive end to flush
    #9085191 - 10/16/08 04:37 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

One of my cakes does not have any clear ends to its flushes. After ive collected what seems to be a full flush, there are still some pins growing on the cake (not aborts). When i wait for them to fully grow, the cake starts producing more pins, starting a new flush. Should i just remove all the pins right now and dunk it? it has just started to produce new pins.

you can dunk for a few hours without killing the pins....i dunno about a 24 hour dunk tho... you probably should remove pins and dunk

I dont see how this is a problem...why not pick and dry them as they mature? Sounds like you are just being obsessive compulsive to me.

For optimum yield, shouldn't i be dunking between each flush?

I dont dunk and my yields are just fine, there are many people who advocate dunking and rolling though; I just think its unnecessary.

dunking is when you take you cake and dunk it in water in between flushes to keep the mycelium hydrated. usually people dunk 12-24hrs to give the mycelium a drink of water to keep it hydrated so it can continue to produce optimal flushes without becoming over dry. misting and humidty isnt always enough.

Psilocybe comes from the Greek root "psilos" meaning bald head and Cubensis because it was first recognized as a new species from specimens collected in Cuba.

I suppose it all depends on environment...Ive never had a problem with a substrate getting too dry, usually I have to fan to get them dryer.

Dunking is when the mycelium takes a bath.

I wish I had your problem!

You can inject some water in your substrate with a syringe. Since it's cakes, if the bottom isn't pinning you could also try putting it in a shallow pan of water so the cake gets some, but it doesn't drown the pins.

Pins are often set on one flush for the next, where they remain dormant until their turn comes.

Don't pick the pins off.  Simply dunk with the pins in place and return to fruiting conditions.  If it seems to be one continuous flush, you can either place the cake in a saucer of water overnight to soak up moisture, or you can pile a tablespoon or two of verm on top of the cake and soak it to re-hydrate the cake.  Good luck with your grows.
