Hay w/ Dung

Questions about Hay in a bluk tek:
Some pictures I see on posts that use hay, I dont see a top casing layer. The fungus is just left to poke it's way out. Does that mean I dont need a top casing layer? Or will it benefit by one? (even pin set, etc)
I have read some people chop the hay up into smaller peices, some people leave it whole. Which is better if either?
Is making your own ratio of poo/dung mix the best way to go? If not, what is?
If there is anything I missed that anyone encountered working with hay, I would love some additional input.

ANy mixture will work, it`s your preference. apply a casing layer is beneficial for bulk substrates in my opinion, it promotes a even flush. As far as straw or hay goes once again your preference but I chop mine and I find it colonises fine. An additional step which I use is to pastuerise an additional amount of just dung. When you pack your poo and straw into your containers apply this straight poo layer on the top of everything. This acts as a barrier for contamination. It`s believed that straw tends to be more susceptable to contamination than just straight poo. SO this should block it quite well. Also make sure that no straw peeps out the top.

Don't forget to let your hay soak in water for 24 hrs. My buddy likes to put it in a bucket with a piece of concrete on the top to keep it down. But its just his preference.

I don`t think soaking your hay is necessary.
