Question

Hello everyone I prepared five 1pint jars about 4 weeks ago and 1 is almost fully formed and my other 4 have huge black spots in them and 1 has brown stuff growing in it. Im just wondering what I did wrong since. When I prepared it I used vermiculite and brown rice flour, I mixed the correct proportion in a pan and baked it 300 degrees for 20 minutes and I boiled a pot of water. I then put the verm and brf mixture in the jars and added water that was 1 mistake I think because I dont think I mixed in the water thoroughly enough, next time I will add the boiling water to the pan of verm + brf and mix it like that. Once I did everything i stored the jars in a tin wrapped up inside of a random blanket which might have caused contamination to go through the 4 holes in the top? I was thinking next time I could seal each jar up in a zip lock bag and put little holes in the bag for air and then wrap everything like that up in a blanket? Any words of advice would be helpful thanks.

Dude, I never heard of doing it that way. Look up the PF Tek and do everything just as it says to do and no other way and you will be ok.

Did you add a dry layer of vermiculite to the top of your jar?
Did you flame your needle between jars?

Ok and just wondering, why doesn't the pf tek have a video on casing, do cakes yield more for them when they keep the cakes in the jar and soaking it with water every 4-5 days than if they cased it?

Wow. Oven? Boiling water? Pan? Look up any of the PF tek recipes on the shroomery. Congrats on getting one that actually worked!

you cant sterilise your ingreidents seperatly then mix together load into jars and use.
www.mushroomvideos.com
watch all 4 pf tek videos. sterilisation should always be done in a pot/pressure cooker.
no crumbling and casing does not increase yeilds. crumbling and spawning to bulk does.

For the holes on top of the lids get some micropore tape! Can't hurt to be safe. You will find the tape in the band-aid/first aid section. It literally looks like a roll of tape, it is Nexcare made by 3M and it is called gentle paper tape but if you read the label it will say micropore tape. It is less than $3 I think and a very wise investment.

which is only needed during pressure cooking to stop water entering the jars. you can also use masking tape. once you inoculate your jars you dont have to tape the holes up. i have lost count of how many times ive told people this. and still get posts wondering why growth has slowed or stopped.
