How long is pasteurizied casing good for?
    #9080358 - 10/15/08 09:27 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I pasteurized an oven bag of peat moss and vermiculite for casing about 2 months ago.  It's been sitting in my garage since then.  It's double bagged and tied off tightly, so I'm thinking except for maybe needing to have some water added to it, it might be ok to use?  What do you all think?

I'm not completely sure, but I don't think pasteurizing again will hurt. Also, assuming there's no mold visible after 2 months, it seems like it's where it needs to be. Hopefully someone that knows for sure will chime in as I'm interested in a definite answer as well.

I've used un-pasteurized 50/50 mix many times.  I always adjust the Ph tho.  The only problem I've found with un-pasteurized mix is that it tends to get infested with gnats which don't really ruin the casing but they do get really annoying.

I bet you can use what you have but it may be a little safer to re-pasteurize although I'd probably just use it myself.

there doesn't appear to be any mold or contams, but it has definitely dried out quite a bit.  what if i just poured some ~180 degree water in there and used that to rehydrate it?

repasteurize it, if its dried out that means its not sealed. It can keep for a few days, but 2 months, that's defiantly not going to happen.

Have you tried using two month old casing mix?

Because I have without contamination.  It will definitely keep more than a few days we are not talking about a bulk substrate here.
