A Sterilization Question ?!

Hey all this is my cat's first time posting here
I've decided on going with the PF Tek method given all the factors. I've considered everything else and this will work best. The one problem is I don't have access to a Pressure cooker, or a stove for that matter. I need some advice on how I can sterilize the jars without a stove. I read a few posts about microwave but I didn't get a clear explanation. Thanks.

Borrow a PC (if you can?). Use a hot plate or someone else's stove. Otherwise, your generaly SOL. 6T

you dont "need" a pressure cooker, I've never used one. as for even "needing" a stove, my pitbull has 3 jars in the incubator done al-la microwave tek, so we'll see.

Im no expert, but i never use a pressure cooker... i have one, but i dont know exactly how to use it properly, and too lazy to learn how to i use the plain boiling method... where you put a pot on the stove and get the water as close to a boil as possible without water going all over your jars and stuff... for an hour... still works fine... As for you using the PF method, good idea, keep it simple... hmmm and as for you nuking for PF method, i dont really reccommend it unless your nuking substrates like vermiculite and peat moss... So you can go ahead and try microwaving.... but if i were you, id just try and find a way to use a stove for PC'ing or boiling/steaming...(if you cant use one at your home, go to a friends house or something, hell, even try and rent one for a few hours lol) Good luck with your Operation

Generally speaking, a PC is not required for PF Tek jars, but it certainly is when working with whole grains. Hope this clarifies things.

Honestly I have never used the microwave to sterilize anything but I suspect it would be tricky. Microwaves can create "hot spots" that are small areas that get overheated, and have other spots that don't get warm enough. If I were you I would go to a friends house and at least use regular pots for sterilization, if it is impossible to use a pressure cooker.

Well i can't boil water unless i can find a hot plate. Anyone know where to buy one? haha I have no access to a stove whatsoever. I plan on using vermiculite and natural BRF. Will microwaving work doing this?

If you're in the USA, I'm sure you will be able to find a hot plate at Wal-Mart, KMart, Target, etc.

I bought a double electric hot plate from Wal-Mart. $24 I think I paid. I also saw a single hot plate at Rite-Aid drug store today for $12.99. Never thought to look there when I was shopping for one.

just thought I'd add my 2 cent on the hotplate issue.
If your looking to save money on it you can always try the Salvation Army type stores and the like. I imagine many of them will have a few laying around for a couple bucks

Thanks guys i really appreciate your help. Learning a lot here by reading the FAQ's and these posts.
I think im going to order that toastmaster hot plate because it looks like the best solution at this point. Im a little hesitant on the pressure cooker. Using the PF Tek method and just boiling water and sterilizing that way, what is the chance of contamination roughly. I saw on an earlier post someone doing it that way, and was wondering what his success rate was. thank

Have used boiling method a few times and have had pretty good luck so far. One and a half hours boiling with tight lid on pan.
Found another hot plat at Walgreens...$9.99. Why is it when I was looking for a single plate all I could find was the double one at walmart and had to get that one. Now I see the single ones all over the place. Must be a Murhpy's Law thing.
