Out jogging with a friend today, I found a large patch. I?d give the location, but there were quite a few just breaking the surface and I could only carry these three/four:
The macro always looks more reddish:
I?m not the best ID?er, but confident enough to eat these things w/o letting the spores show. That?s when they?re most almondy

Thanks MM; I'll certainly see what I can do. These three were the oldest of the bunch, the others will be awhile before they're printable. I can't believe no one snagged them, they were in a pedestrian-heavy area.
BTW, I sauteed them in grapeseed oil, a little butter, a little garlic, and a splash of white wine. After cooking 10-15 minutes, flipping occasionally, I poured off the liquid and gave them a short 'dry' cooking, which slightly browned the edges of the mushrooms. Smelling the mixture was interesting; Fresh cut mushrooms have a slight hint of almond smell; As they cooked, the odor became stronger. After the final browning, the smell and flavor of almonds was very pronounced. For my palate, though they're different experiences, they are superior to the morel.

I found a prince while mountain biking last summer. It was on a 90 F day at about 1500 ft. I still have the specimen, I will take a pic and post it here in a sec.

The specimen smells very pungent. I ask how others like the smell, it has always been a unanamous bad smell. I like it, however I have also tasted it and can relate the flavour to the smell.

Of the dozens of species to cross my sensitive palate, i must say the agaricus augustus ranks up there in the top five, second maybe to morels, sparrassis crispa, and laetiporous sulphureus. if you found a patch of them, you are quite lucky. the biggest patch i have seen was five specimens. those things are f'ing delish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I find the prince commonly in my area It grows in the late summer with little to no rain in peoples yards. I have tried cloning and germinating spores with no luck. It is a very fussy mushroom in culture but I have seen it done.

Where have you seen this done? Are you saying you have seen the spores grown out on substrate or the mushrooms fruit invitro. I am very interested in the cultivation of this mushroom if you send me info i will send you the print of the Conocybe cyanopus. I can't tell if this mushroom is mycorhizzal, but it appears in some cases (from others) that it is not. I have only found it under doglar fir and western red ceder and have never found it growing in the open. If anyone else can contribute to this observation it would be appreciated.

Stunz what state did you find those in and where they under trees? If you could give the weather condidtions for the last 7 days including humidity and temperature. You may be able to find them whenever that weather conicidence occurs in the same location year after year. I have noticed that all patches in a local area fruit at nearly the exact same time what i mean is that if you no several other patches they will be out too.

Yes Workman, any info you might have on what was successfully used for agar work would be well-received. I had no problems with blazei, figured this would be similar. Not the case it seems.
As far as the mycorrhizal note, it's funny you mention that. They were growing in a crescent shape around a cedar tree, so much like a lepiota or such that I was sure it was mycorrhizal. But other agaricus don't seem to be mycorrhizal, so I blew it off as a fluke.

I don't know my trees, but it was some kind of cedar. The tree was ornamental and large, very well developed, with a thick layer of cedar mulch around it. The mulch looked to be from last year or before.

Agaricus augustus
The Prince grows primarily in the duff under conifer forests. It may therefore be introduced to the garden under conifer trees and shrubs. Apparently it is particularly fond of spruce. Although commercial spawn may be difficult or impossible to obtain, you would be wise to mix any trimmings from your culinary collections with some needle litter, introduce the mixture to your conifers, and keep the area moist.
You may also have success with growing from sterile tissue or spore cultures if you are technically inclined. Agaricus grow relatively slowly in agar and on spawn, so do not be discouraged, but be patient. Adding a bit of sterilized, partially decomposed needle litter to your agar and spawn may help speed the growth. This beautiful and highly prized edible is certainly worth a little extra effort

In GGMM 3rd edition, page 18, Agaricus augustus is marked as a woodland mushroom with unknown cultivation parameters.
It would seem that the similar and far easier A. blazei is the species to work with.
