Extra nitrogen
    #9082697 - 10/15/08 05:49 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Hey so it's been a while since the last (and first) time i grew.  I had pint cakes that gave me an awesome first flush, but the second and third flushes were shitty.  I was thinking that this was because there wasn't enough nitrogen in the mix.  I believe the mix i used was 4/3 cups vermiculite 1/2 cup brf and 1/2 cup water per jar.
I was thinking that next time i tried this i would need to either use more brf or add extra nitrogen in form of blood meal.

My question is instead of the blood meal could i add dynamite plant food to the mix?  It is a mix that contains nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium and there are two options as for the ratio 13-13-13, and 18-6-8.  I will probably be bying the 13-13-13 mix anyway so I want to know if it would be ok to add that.  Is there any danger in adding phosphate and potassium to the mix or would it be fine?

Dont add anyting to the pf tek. the ratio you should use is 2  parts verm 1 part water and 1 part brown rice flour.

Mycelium is not like plants, they eat food just like us.

Now the question is did you dunk after your flush. Sounds like your cakes are drying out.

Id suggest using half pints. pf tek substrate performs best in smaller jars

I did dunk in between flushes, and it actually seemed that if anything it hurt the cakes more than it help.  Drying out was definitely not the problem.  The impression that I had was that the cakes blew their load on the first flush and didn't have the strength for decent second and third flushes.  Like the first flush was just amazing, i don't have the pictures anymore but each cake had over 50 mushrooms on it, with a total of over an ounce dry from 2 cakes.

After the first flush though, the cakes were noticeably weaker, more gray than white so i was just thinking they didn't have enough nitrogen to recover.

The reason I was asking about the blood meal is because a friend of mine ordered some premade substrate jars online and they had blood meal in it, his results were decent, nowhere as good as my first flush though.  Anyway I'm pretty sure I will try out adding some next time i try.

But still my question remains will phosphorus and potassium hurt the process in any way?

Mushrooms aren't plants, so there is no need for fertilizer.  If you want bigger fruits, spawn your cakes to manure or some other bulk substrate ingredient(s) such as coir or straw.  Or, simply dunk between flushes.

You can substitute brf for rye flour/wbs flour/quinoa flower etc etc even dextrose will work or you can combine a bunch of ratios of different nutrients and mix them all together, also try using diluted coffee to soak the vermiculite instead of just plain water or even try adding a half tps of coffee grounds in with the nutrients. Don't exceed the recommended amount of nutrients per a cake or bad things will happen

remember if you use rye flour you will need a presure cooker.

Never used a PC and never have had a problem with sterilization. :>

Time will tell.  Rye can hold bacterial endospores which must be pressure cooked to kill off.  Not all rye has them, but enough times your projects will fail that it's recommended to pressure cook for sterilization of cereal grains.  What we recommend here is what will provide success 100% of the time.  Anything less is bad advice.

Very often, we see members with less than six months since registering recommending all sorts of short cuts, but after a year or two, they've been spanked enough times that they recommend proper procedures.  This hobby has enough pitfalls without skimping on something so easy to perform as proper sterilization.
