Silicone Sealant?
    #9080141 - 10/15/08 08:22 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I want to purchase some silicone sealant.  I plan to use it with agar's baby bottle LC tek and also to seal some tyvek discs into jar lids for my 1/2 pint print chambers.  Can anyone suggest a specific brand/type of sealant by name?  I have looked over the sealant aisle at Lowe's hardware and its a little intimidating being that I don't know exactly what I'm looking for.

Did you find that RTV in the automotive section? I searched everywhere for it, found nothing.

Yep. I thought it was kinda in a weird area, but not all walmarts arrange there stuff the same... I found it in the huge isle of oil, all by its self. Small selection too. Al-tho I did buy some regular silicone also and it said, "All temperatures" leads me to believe that any ole silicone will resist high temps (PC) and still maintain its shape after being cured.

auto zone or napa always has RTV sealant. I definately prefer it over clear silicone because it's rated past 400 degrees.

You don't need the red 'high temp silicone', as it's intended for exhaust systems and other applications that operate at MUCH higher temps than your PC.  Use regular clear silicone sealant.

While ridiculously off-topic, I would respectfully add that you should not use high-temp RTV on engine exhaust components, but it is useful for components like valve cover gaskets or other components where you need to seal low pressure oil leaks in an area exposed to constant engine temps.  For exhaust, you'd want a graphite-based fireproof resin.

Not so.  For many years, I've sealed the exhaust flanges on my 1954 Harley Davidson Panhead with silicone sealant.  It seals perfectly and lasts until the next time I remove the pipes.  I also use silicone sealant on the exhaust flanges on both of my aircraft.  It works perfectly.  However, clear silicone sealant is fine for the 250F encountered in a pressure cooker.

It wouldn't hurt to use the RTV right? I don't mind the couple extra bucks. I'm sure it will be more than enough for a lot of lids.

I am amazed that it survived that amount of heat - it's certainly not designed to do so.  I know some RTV's are heat-rated to 600*F, but exhaust temps usually exceed that.  How close to the engine were all these?  Fairly close to the exhaust exit?

On all the last model cars I've worked on, even anti-seize rated to 1100*F ends up burning off of exhaust studs that are near or on the exhaust manifold.  One thing I just realized that might make a big difference, though - have you ever tried using RTV on exhaust parts on an engine with a catalytic converter?

(I completely agree that generic, all-purpose clear silicone will survive a pressure cooker.)

The exhaust flange on a panhead is about 2" from the exhaust valve. It seals up fine, but needs to of course be replaced any time I remove the pipes.  The heat is enough to blue the chrome on the pipes.  Of course, it's only a thin layer that's compressed by metal on both sides.  The silicone helps keep exhaust gasses from escaping and leaving black stains on the pipes, as well as prevents backfiring when decelerating.  Sorry to drift off-topic.

As said, clear silicone will be fine for sealing jars and will withstand PCing.  It's what I used to glue the glass pieces that made up this maze for mycelium.  It has stood up to several PC cycles so far.

Also note how the mycelium approaching the rye berries is far ahead of the mycelium taking the wrong path.

I did notice...

Has it developed beyond that point or is that a recent photo?  I'm wondering if once it finds the rye berries will it give up on further exploration...  I suppose you used a slightly starved agar media or??

The maze experiments were conducted four or five years ago.

On the first run, nearly the entire surface of the weak agar solution was covered before the mycelium found the grain.

On the second run, the mycelium reached the grains by the 'correct' path prior to finding the reward the long way around(there was two paths to the reward).

By the third time through the maze, the mycelium ran straight towards the rye grains, and took no wrong turns.

Each time, the mycelium to transfer was selected from a random part of the colonized grain at the end of the maze.  The idea was to see if mycelium possesses sentience, or at least rudimentary memory.  In my opinion, it does.
