Peat/Coco and verm sterile casing questions
    #9081786 - 10/15/08 02:14 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

When my friend made casings in the past he used pre-pasteurized horse manure.  He is currently out of poo and he was wondering if he could use some peat and coco-coir along with vermiculite to case with.  He knows people do it all the time but he was wondering what is the best method to sterilize the materials.  He did some reading about the microwave and even the oven but the saw mixed opinions and wasnt sure what process to follow.  He wanted to get some suggestions and opinions on the best way to sterilize this next casing cause he would really love some success while he waits for his poo in the mail.  So please any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Are we talking about casing layers (ie on the top) or a substrate? You should only use hpoo and coco-coir as a substrate with your spawn. If you use a nutrient rich casing layer you are only asking for contamination. Use peat moss, hydrated lime, gypsum, and vermiculite for your casing layer. As for the casing layer you should pasteurize it. Put it in some quart jars and boil it in water for 90 minutes and make sure the temperature is around 140-160 degrees.

Oh ok thanks for that he has never used anything but poo for making the casing (not the casing layer) with.  He has a small amount of poo left and a nice bit of coco-coir to work with.  Does he need to sterilize the coco at all, the poo is already pasteurized, or just mix with the poo?
Thanks for the clarification on peat moss being used for casing layers, not the casing itself.

Pasturize the coir as noted above. I break up the coir, put it in a medium sized cooler, then pour a gallon (or whatever the package says) of near-boiling water. Wait till temp gets to about 170-180 and put the lid on. It's at a higher temp for a minimal amount of time and I have not (yet) had any contam problems. End result is it's at pasteurization temp for a good 2-3 hours.

Poo / coir is bulk substrate. We know what you mean, but you might get a good ribbing if you mix casing and bulk sub...

the casing layer goes on top of the substrate and is typically non-nutritive.

Yup what nenl said . Me personally I just stuck with 160 but I can see 180 to keep it as pasteurization temps for the duration. I ended up using a little more than one gallon and squeezed out what I needed to. It's easier to squeeze water out than boil more to add more. Here is what I used to prepare my coir:

Oatman2000's Spawning to straight coir but you can add pasteurized hpoo, spent coffee grounds, gypsum as you wish. I just went the straight and simple way.

I used to add extra water up front then leach it through a pillow case - that's the best way to get field capacity, but I'm extremely lazy...

RR has a good method of pasteurizing using a pressure cooker, but I couldn't find it after a quick search and don't want to give wrong info. Maybe he or someone will chime in with the specifics.
