Professional Help Please - Turning cakes into casings
    #9081219 - 10/15/08 12:31 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I have 6 - 1/2 pint jars that i was originally going to grow as cakes, but after reading much about turning cakes into casings, i have decided that i would take that route. I was going to use the "wafer" tek or "sea of shrooms" and i have read about it and understand it pretty well. I only have one question. When i was planning on growing cakes, i was planning on letting the jars sit for an extra week after full colonization so the myc could get a better hold on the substrate. If im planning on breaking up the cakes and turning them into casings, should i even worry about giving the myc an extra week before birthing? I figure i could break them up, case them, then let them have some extra time to fix the myc network, then start the pinning/ fruiting process. Any ideas? Any responses would be greatly appreciated!!

Let them fully colonize as planned.  If you want to experiment by using it as spawn, then I would use 2 of your 6 cakes.  Use 4 as originally planned and use 2 as you spawn to a "small" bulk grow.  That way you start getting your feet wet with what bulk growing is about and you still have 4 "tried and true" cakes just in case.  You can't go wrong by doing it that way.

If you're just going to do 1 or 2 casings, the easiest way imo is to use this kind of sterilite.

Just crumble your stuff up, make sure it can go 2-5 inches depth, put a casing layer over it and you're set.  No need to use perlite or humidifier, just mist 1 or 2 times a day. Fan it normally, about 3-5 times a day is superb. You might want to put a piece of black trashbag in the bottom, to hold the substrate it can help prevent side pinning.

To bulk it up and make the sub thicker, mix in some coir and let that run.

Personally, if this is your first grow, I would stick with cakes. Casing will increase your yield, but in my experience, not by that much with just PF-style cakes cased with coir or peat. There's also a lot more that can go wrong - overlay and easier contamination come to mind.

I'm not trying to discourage you - by all means, if you're comfortable with it, then by all means proceed.

Letting fully colonized cakes sit for around for another five days is also the general rule before birthing, as well. So you've got that part spot on.

Dunno just a few on the sub level, and some closer to the top.  It's not a shotgun i still fan it a bit. Cased w/ verm mostly.

Brennus,  when you spawn your cakes to coir, the yeild increases atleast 5x.  maybe you had a bad experience with it.  Cakes suck period.  Thats why ive gone to bags.  But coir in the bags =

T2K,  do you have any more info on that box?  because im going to have some spawn bags with grain in there i want to dump into one of those.  I didnt find very good results with my ShotgunFC

Cakes don't suck, there have been a couple people with some insane cake grows, if I had only kept those pictures.

small cakes have good colonization time, many uses, and very low contamination rate. They are also a way for people without a pressure cooker to spawn to bulk.  Cakes also make good decorative ornaments.

cakes do not suck, its just usually advanced cultivators move up to bulk for that reason only. Being able to turn one cake into a half pound of myc has its benefits but sometimes, gram for gram, cakes when taken care of properly can out perform a bulk grow. I believe this is usually with the small 1/4 pinters but i have seen some MASSIVE shrooms come off of cakes
