Polyfil in the holes of the lids (not very effective, IMO) or synthetic filter discs.

I love Tyvek, personally.  Tyvek with an RTV injection site has always worked really well.

While Tyvek is highly recommended you can drill a 1/4" hole on the top and use Poly-Fil (used in stuffed animals). You can grab a bag at Wal-Mart under a buck I think? It is very cheap. It is non-organic so it is a good filter. Or you can use a filter disk but those are a bit more expensive and you would have to get from a sponsor. Use the poly-fil but really look into Tyvek, get it at Staples or get it free from a local shipper. Or others said get a painters suit at Home Depot for cheap and it makes a lot of filters.

Silly will you post a pic of tyvek with an rtv port? Do you just have a hole punched in the lid like you would for polyfil and center the rtv over the hole on the tyvek or something?

what about band-aids? could they be taped over inoculation holes? they usually have a material on them that lets the wound breathe but doesn't let contams in.

Not band-aids but 3M makes this stuff called Micropore tape. It is also called gentle paper tape. Find it in the aisle that sells band-aids and what not. It works too, you should have that as well! Cheap too. But still Tyvek is a staple right now, highly recommend having it.

I was nervous about getting tyvek too and was just going to use polyfill, but then as I got all the supplies,  I went over to the post office and bamm  there they were, with no one around,  I took a whole stack of em to last me for quite a while.  Why not get it?  Its free,  or at least in my post office it is.

my grain lids have a 1\4th hole for gas exchange cover'd with a small square of tyvek over the hole. with a piece of micropore tape over the square of tyvek. and. rtv injection ports. after the jars are used i use iso to get the tape glue off the lids. to replace filter material.
