Packing Subtrate in Casings
    #9080095 - 10/15/08 07:59 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

If I were making a casing in which a given container were the same size as a quart jar of grain, would I receive good results from applying a little pressure and packing the substrate into such containers?  I know that for colonization purposes the grains need to be loose and not sticky, but since these grains have already colonized I assume they will continue to colonize even after being compressed.  The casing layer of 50/50+ was spread and not pressed down.

You should press down the sides, around the edges to prevent side pinning. It also depends on what your growing, some mushies like it compressed.

No, never compress anything beyond what gravity does by itself.  NEVER use substrate material in casing layers.  The word 'casings' doesn't exist, so I don't know what you're referring to.  'Casing' is a verb, and refers to the act of creating a casing layer.  There is no plural form to verbs in the English language.
