Why do people bash on coffee filters?
    #9080048 - 10/15/08 07:32 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I've been using a double layer of coffee filters in place of tyvek for my wbs jars for quite some time now. People say that the pores are too large to keep contaminants out, but from my own personal experience i've discovered this is an absolute fallacy.

The only problem i've EVER had with coffee filters is that they can tear easily when moist after sterilization.

No polyfill?
No tyvek?

USE COFFEE FILTERS:grin: they work just as well as tyvek... Or at the very least, the cheap ass Kroger brand standard white coffee filters do, Thats what i use, with great success.

you get a big fuck you on that one sir.

My jars colonize in an absolutely FILTHY, carpeted, mold spore-laden room, in open air, with an oscillating fan running in the room.

Trust me, if contams could have gotten through, they would have.

As with many aspects of this hobby, what works for one does not necessarily work for all...

It probably depends alot on the general environment. Coffee filters are better than nothing, but there are better things than coffee filters. Odds are better with tyvec, polyfill, filter discs...

I once used a coffee filter when the tyvec came loose and that jar was fine, so I can attest that coffee filters do work at least ~1% of the time...

One thing though is if they get wet, contam can very easily slip through where tyvec is close to water tight, so again odds come into play...

Your ignorance and inability to accept the fact that you are dead fucking wrong is mind-boggling.

I'm just trying to help people that may not have tyvek or polyfill around, coffee filters can/do/will work, My contam rate is less than 1%.

I just leave the foil on my jars for a couple days after pc'ing, before i nocc em up, usually gives the filter time to dry completely before its exposed to open air.

I use tyvek and then coffee filters. There is no reason not to use Tyvek as it is free and can be delivered to your doorstep. Also Staples carries Tyvek envelopes if you are in a bind and need it ASAP. Coffee filters work but Tyvek is better. Go to this link and order all the Tyvek envelopes for free and have them shipped to your door:
http://shop.usps.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10152&storeId=10001&categoryId=13354&productId=11695&langId=-1

Huge Tyvek envelope at no cost to you, why wouldn't you use it??????

Adds another felony to the list, it's illegal to use that shit for anything but mailing, plus a lot of people are really paranoid about having shit delivered.

xD
you don't even know what i'm arguing,
besides getting you worked up to make you look more stupid, i can tell you that filters aren't even a necessity.. of course coffee filters will "work", but it has nothing to do with the coffee filter.. tissue paper could provide the same results..

contamination is usually directly related to grain prep
not your filter.

Or you can always go to just about any hardware store (Home Depot,Lowes,Menards,Ace),and purchase a Tyvek brand painters suit for relativitely cheap (10.00$ or less),and cut it up to make quite a few filter discs. Better than risking a felony, but thats just my opinion.

Well if paranoid about delivery go to Staples and purchase 50 Tyvek envelopes. So it costs roughly $20 but it will be the best $20 you spend. Anyways if people are so paranoid about getting things delivered then don't even order spores because having a package shipped from a company with the name "spore" in it (I'm sure the government knows all the spore websites and shipping locations) is way more obvious then ordering some envelopes to priority mail Christmas cards or important documents

Edit: I wouldn't know about ordering 300 at a time though  I ordered 20, plus the 50 I bought I should be good for a year. Also Micropore tape seems better than coffee filters too, cheaper, and it will last a while. Tyvek really helps keeping the moisture in, that's why Tyvek is used for important document delivery.

I've been playing Russian Roulette twice a week for quite some time now.  People say you have a chance of dying, but from my own experience I've discovered this is an absolute fallacy.

If you're going to be involved in this hobby, you might as well take every step you can to prevent contamination.  The groundwork has been laid for new cultivators through the experience of the "trusted cultivators".  Use a Tyvek painters suit, a few hundred filters can be had for 6 bucks.

Ah ok that makes sense. Yeah I used to work for a law firm and EVERYTHING mailed was in a Tyvek envelope. But decided I didn't want to be a lawyer so no more excuses to bulk order Tyvek lol.

One more 'fuck you' in cultivation and you'll have some time off to think about it.

I've placed a sporeprint on a table with a coffee filter over it, and then looked at them through the lens of my stereo zoom microscope.  At least ten spores can be seen through each open weave of the coffee filter, so there's no way they make a proper filter for mycology.  If a coffee filter had the pore size necessary to stop mold spores, your coffee would overflow and run all over your kitchen counter top.  If you doubt this, just try using tyvek as a coffee filter and watch what happens when you brew a pot.

If you wish to use them and take your chances, that's your business.  What we recommend here are ways to ensure 100% success.  Don't call anyone stupid for attempting to point people in the correct direction for best results.
