Help
    #9079127 - 10/14/08 11:03 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I have just spawned my WBS to a nutrient rich compost, but during the process I have filled my trays to the top and sealed them off to allow WBS to colonize the compost, with out leaving any room for a casing layer. What should I do?

Cut the top inch or so from a tray the same size and tape it to the top upside down.

I have heard that you don't always need a casing layer for bulk substrate. Would be nice to get some one to answer that for sure.

You will need a casing layer for every bulk but straw.  You could find a larger clean tray/s or tub that you could place the fully colonized trays into then add a casing layer.  As long as the tray is fully colonized you can move it around.

Would a thin moist verm layer be OK?

no, verm is not a good casing.  Do a search for casing mixes like the classic 50/50 mix.

cubes will fruit perfectly off bulk of any kind without a casing as long as your humidity and moisture stay in good range. many experienced people on this site dont case their bulk ever. a casing layer just provids a microclimate of sorts= more forgiving if ranges  shift. the casing just holds moisture. if your conditions are correct, you dont need it.

casing is optional with bulk substrates.

If you can maintain 95-99% humidity they will perform fine without it.
