It's 40g per Liter BTW.
You could just buy agar agar powder and malt extract from a brewers supply. You could also get dextrose from the brewers supply and make PDA. It's good to switch up agar recipes when storing a culture long term. I believe it's common practice to switch up the media used every 6 months.
EDIT Looks like I'm tooo slow haha...

and IME using more like 30g per L of water works better. I have had too many times where I PC the premade MEA with 40g pre L, and it never sets up due to over heating I think... not sure tho

mycosupply has 500 grams MEA for less than $40 and that is over a pound
http://www.mycosupply.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?preadd=action&key=MEAR01
I've heard as well to mix it light on nutrients - makes the mycelium stretch out in search of nutes.
that much agar excites me in ways that she never could.
Why do folks here make their own agar when this stuff is so cheap? Is their a benefit to making your own?

because 1/2 a lb of regular agar agar is far superior and costs less to mix up yourself, seeing as how you only need about 10g per L of water to make nonnutritious agar

not familiar with that although I have seen it. Is Agar Agar different than MEA? What is nonnutrious agar?
where do you get agar agar?

I think agar is agar powder and MEA is malt extract with agar powder and PDA potato dextrose /w agar powder. I'm pretty sure agar agar is non-nutritious form and the additive is the nutes.

that makes more sense to me as well. It may be cheaper to add your own nutes, but conveince and accuracy of the pre-mixed just seems to be worth it even when price shopping like I do.
just my thought and opinion

Mycosupply has regular agar too. http://www.mycosupply.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?preadd=action&key=AGAR01 I've seen other places having it cheaper online and some Asian food stores may have it as well but I was never lucky finding it.
Like I said before people buy agar powder so they can vary the recipes for one and because the other additives like light malt extract, dextrose and potatoes are very cheap. You buy premixed MEA and your mostly paying for light malt extract which actually costs a couple bucks a brewers supply.
I've heard food grade agar doesn't have the gel strenth to make a good media but the food grade stuff I picked up has been fine for me.

interesting. As a well equipped agar nooooob, what do you suggest I get. I plan on working agar on several strains including edibles, and plan to maintain some isolates long term eventually.
So you have to add the nutrients to the regular agar in the link there? still unclear on which to get

Yeah you'll need to add other ingredients to the regular agar powder.
Here is the recipes http://www.shroomery.org/9393/FastFreds-Media-Cookbook
It's up to you if you want pre-mixed or not. If you have a digital scale it should be no problem making any of the mixtures yourself and you'll have way more options if you go with the agar powder to mix yourself.
BTW you totally hijacked this thread lol but we'll let that go cause we are nice to nooobs here lol but try to start your own next time.

Try health food stores or I can give you a link if you want to purchase agar powder online then go to the store and purchase instant boxed potatoes and mix them together and make yourself some PDA

I have no experience with mycology or agar, but perhaps you could cut a chunk of agar out; making a reservior . ..?.

Hey it's me again I heard that from a tek it's called the grocery store agar tek.. http://www.shroomery.org/9427/Grocery-Store-Agar-Tek Just take agar and instant potatoe flakes and mix them together per the recipe and it creates PDA.. You want to mix 1/4 cup agar powder with 2 tablespoons of instant potatoe flakes..
Also here is a link to some agar powder just bookmark it or what not.. It seems expensive but in the long run it will save you money.. http://www.amazon.com/Agar-Powder-NOW-Foods-lbs/dp/B000JN8MT4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1224051555&sr=8-1
I got some pre mixed MEA from mycosupply, but next time when I got the money I'll be going for the home made..

PDA is potato - dextrose - agar.
Dextrose is like core sugar and important to the mix. Check out this link for most recipes you'll need. They are very strait forward.
http://www.shroomery.org/9393/FastFreds-Media-Cookbook
You'll notice he used honey in that other post to replace the dextrose.

It says to add 4.5grams or nearly a quarter cup of ground agar agar. However I've out and bought the powdered form of agar. Would I add 4.5 grams of that with that recipe Damion posted or what's the deal?
edit: Never mind I found it, didn't properly search it, they are the same per weight BTW if anyone need know.
