13 days...finally beginning to colonize?
    #9076166 - 10/14/08 01:36 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

i just looked at my mycobag and noticed on the top of it that there is a bunch of spots where pieces of substrate are starting to clump together and cover in white fuzz. i'm excited but i think i remember reading somewhere that other than mycelium, there is also a type of white fuzz which is a sign of contamination and i'm not sure if it's true or not? can anyone help clarify this?

also, how do i know if the humidity is too high or not? the inside of the bag has very small specks of condensation on the inside of it...also the terrarium has condensation covering the walls...is this good?

any help is appreciated...thanks! =]

Humidity should be fine if your substrate isn't oversaturated. Condensation is a sign that inside the bag is a fair amount warmer than outside. Nothing to worry about imo unless it's below 75 outside

Trich and other molds are white/off white - the green is the spores as far as I know. If it is contam, you'll know in a day or two.

Hey, just wait it out any if it changes any other color than just straight white that is when you should be worrying. Also humidity in your incubator isn't the safest because it makes for easy transportation of contams. I would try to get the humidity down in there from whatever is creating it because your bag can hold its own moisture right now! GL!

okay got it...but the reason of the humidity is because i'm using a fish tank heater for incubation...the water evaporates and creates condensation/humidity. that's the point of an incubator isn't it? lol

The way my trich started in a jar was it looked like it was colonizing really fast then I woke up to green spots all over my grain, I confused the trich mycelium with the p. cubensis mycelium.

I'm no expert though :p

You'll know for sure when you put in fruiting conditions, but most likely if it's contam, it'll change in the next day or two. green, brown, orange, black are all bad. Wattery yellow isn't horrible, but it means the myc is fighting with something. blue is usually bruising from bumping, shaking, mixing the substrate and no problem.

Good luck

You dont need to worry about humidity during colinisation of your substrate. It definatly should not be in the terrarium with high humidity, which could get the filter patch wet and allow contaminants to grow right through the filter.

There might be a better way to handle this, but I use a blow dryer on tyvec covered jars when they come out damp. forced air will push contams though the filter, so blow at an angle, pretty much parallel to the filter. Give it a good spray of lysol first also.

Again, there might be safer ways to get your filter dried, but I've never had problems with jars / tyvec...

temp should be around 80F - room temp is fine for most. The incubator does not need any water/moisture in it, and as such should not have any extra humidity.

dude you can't operate a fish tank heater when it's not in water it's a fire hazard...plus right now it stays around 75-77 degrees...if i get rid of the incubator it will drop down to like 65

No not really. The difference between growth at 75F and 80F is minimal.

Do not incubate at 86F . This is old information. Above 83F mycelium growth dastically slows down. since myc will produce a few degrees of its

ffs im not typing this out again

fish tank heater + water + sealed bottle = heatbomb (type that in the search box up top)
... I missed the part about fishtank heater or I would have suggested this earlier...

I incubate around 80 and have fast colonization. some say more some say less. I say around 80...

i searched this but i'm confused about something...how exactly is one supposed to plug it in while it's in a bottle? make a hole for the cord and put tape over it?
