How do I fix this?
    #9075390 - 10/14/08 10:26 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Hi, all,

Im on my first attempt at this.  Im using the pftek jars and all has gone pretty well.  I have a bunch of jars that are heavily colonized with no contamination.  Ive taken them out of the jars and put them in a terrarium.  Im running an ultrasonic humidifier and keeping them at about 75 degrees - over 90% RH.  The thing is.. Im getting no fruiting.

Ive got a 25w blue aquarium light in the terrarium (read somewhere that they like that) that Im running 24 hours a day.

I got no primordia in my jars even though they were completely colonized.  I left them for like a week after they were fully colonized - maybe more.  They were pulling back from the sides of the jar but not forming primorida.

The only thing I can think of that I may have done wrong is I didnt keep the jars in the dark while they were colonizing.  They were left near my computer where its warm.

Is there any way to get this going in the right direction?

Thanks

Be nice to know how long ago you took them out of the jars . I've waited 12 days for pins with cakes before .

Not keeping them dark wouldn't have anything to do with it . I never keep my colonizing subs in the dark .

they are probably fine- you should have left them in the jar for an extra week. im not a fan of light maybe the 24 hours cycle is keepingthem from pinning try 12/12 or something

Well - I have a 2" diameter hole that I've cut in the lid of the chamber and covered with a coffee filter.  I was hoping that the ultrasonic was driving enough air through the 7/16 plastic tubing so that I didn't have to open the terrarium.  Do I need more fresh air than that?

first off drop the light to 12 hours on 12 off
give them time they will pin
jars dont need to be in the dark while cilonizing
and how big is your fc? you probalt dont need the ultrasonic just perlite in the bottom
hope this helps some

CO2 is heavier than O2 . With only a hole on the top , chances are the CO2 level at cake level is a little high . Holes near cake level will allow for the CO2 to escape easier .

Don't know what kind of US you're using , but they aren't usually the best for providing FAE .

Fan is as often as possible - 3-5 times a day or more is recommended. Fresh air is a key pinning trigger, more important than light schedule. There might be other forces at work, but it sounds like FAE is definitely one of them...

No worries about opening the terrarium and getting contam at this point - if your cakes are fully colonized they have a contam barrier.

Holes near the bottom and I add a fish tank bubbler to help while I'm not around - this does not replace manual fanning though...

cakes need high humidity. 95% atleast. you need neer saturation at the surface of myceliuum. if you can achieve 99% rh then that is perfect.

forgot the humidifier and build yourself a shotgun fruiting chamber. mechanical means of humidification an air exchange are a pain to get right and break down. the shotgun fc will keep rh at atleast 95 while providing some natural air exchange. fan and mist 5 times dailly

OK... sounds like FAE is definitely my prob then cuz I haven't been opening it at all.

The terrarium is a 10gal aquarium so I can't really drill a hole near the bottom (I'll prolly break the glass).  I'll start fanning it a few times a day.  I saw the perlite option after I'd read the guide that suggested the ultrasonic - so I already have the ultrasonic working - I may as well stick with it now - my RH seems to be OK - the cheap rh/temp sensor I got at radioshack reads up to 95% and it's gone off the scale.  4 of the cakes in it are just flat white - one of them is growing some fluffy mycelium.

I'll cut the light back and start getting some good air exchange in there and post back.

Thanks for all the help so freakin' fast!

One of the reasons aquariums aren't a very popular choice for a FC:thumbup:

Ok... just watched the video on building a shotgun chamber.

Wish I'd seen that before I blew $60 on a humidifier :frown:  I can use the humidifier to keep the room RH up a bit, I guess.

So... I guess I'll dump the aquarium, build the other chamber and fan the heck out of it.

Will the cakes that are already in there be ok, do you think?  Or are those history?

I have another 10 jars started that will be ready in a couple of weeks but I'd like to get my technique refined a bit (as in *working*) before I put 'all my eggs in one basket'

Thanks again!

Thanks for all the help,

My wife has never tried 'shrooms before so I'm trying to get this all happening to introduce her to the idea.  In fact, I haven't done them since my 20's... so like 20 years or more ago.  I used to really enjoy it - hope she does too

I live up in the pacific northwest so this time of year there's lots of them growing wild - thing is it's been so long since I picked I don't trust myself to ID them right any more... too many ways to go wrong with wild ones.

Good luck!

One bit of advice with the wife - don't push it on her. If she doses and doesn't really want to, it'll be the makings of the first, last and very bad trip for both of you...

And of course, start small and work up...

Enjoy!

Well, I built a shotgun fc and will move my cakes over to it tomorrow.  I didn't want to spend the money on another rubbermaid container (still pissed about the ultrasonic lol) so I took a 5 gallon water jug - the ones that sit on the watercoolers... and cut the top off the bottom and made them fit into each other so it can be opened and closed.  Drilled all the 1/4" holes like the shotgun fc so it should, hopefully, work the same.  Looks kinda cool to boot.  Washed up 4 or so inches of perlite for the bottom and left it to stabilize till tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I checked my cakes... they seemed pretty light - I think they may be a bit dehydrated?  I decided to try the soak and roll technique with them so I boiled up some water and let it cool then scraped off the last of the vermiculite and put them to soak overnight (they're soaking as I type).  It was hard to get them to submerge - I had to weight down a plate to hold them under.  I'm gonna roll them in sterilized vermiculite tomorrow and put them in the new FC and this time maintain better FAE.

Hope this works
