I just see that little area...Like 5 percent or something.
It looks good though.

Only 5%.....Well I inoculated the bag in the center so does that mean it is more than 5% since you probably can't see most of it? And it does look healthy!? SWEET! I'm stoked! Thanks MHbound!

you definately need to break up the substrate, or "knead" it more. I suggest you break it up thru the bag after u sterilize it since that compacts it a lot. Break it all up till u get it to a consistency similair to a loosely packed BRF cake.. This looseness allows the mycelium to run thru the substrate much quicker. This is what I have picked up from watching and reading from some of the pros, but check my opinion since im a slight noob

is that the filter patch or the spot where you knocked it up? if its the patch you need to try and move the substrate away form it and let it breathe more

Well I'm just guess man...I can't tell from that picture. I mean it's more than 5% I was kind of just bs'ing around.
You could go ahead, and break it up though for sure. Don't get too in to it, but a little breaking up is no problem if you say it started from the inside, and worked out.

I'd have to disagree on breaking it up at this point. I'd wait until about 40-50% colonization or not breaking it up at all. Those bags do best when LEFT ALONE.

I agree, but I think he said something like it looks like it's 30-40 percent...Maybe I made that up.
Anyway, like I said he is the only person that can determine the percent of it has colonized.
Edit: I made that up he never said it I just looked. If that's the only point at which it has colonized let it ride. When I say 40-50 percent I am looking at the outside...So, once half of the outside has colonized then I would move in to crumble it up a little, but like Foo said above those bags are made to be left alone. No foul in crumbling a little once it reaches 40-50 IMO.

I deff agree...only break up the substrate in the bags prior to inoculation. Too late now. I can tell by the shape of the bag though, you never loosened up the substrate after pressure cooking.. pressure cooking the substrate applies 15 lbs of pressure evenly over your bag and increases the density by pushing particles together. Myceliun will be encouraged better to grow in a substrate that is not so dense, thats why i reccommened breaking it up inside the bag before innoculating. good luck and lets hear how it turns out

I think it looks a little wet, this could possibly be slowing down the growth too. What does everyone else think, too wet?

TMS is correct Fooman! Good eye! I taped over the inoc point because in one of my pictures I zoomed in and I could of sworn I could see through the little hole where the syringe had entered right into the substrate so to be on the safe side I taped over em. Though they are supposed to be self-healing I am not sure at what gauge they will not self heal. "On No!" I am the hasty type and broke it up last night because there was a post from someone at TMS that said to break it up when it is 10-20% colonized. Though I have heard everything from 10% all the way up to 50% before crumbling. Live and learn I guess. I should have waited for your guys responses. So does crumbling to early slow down colonization time? If that is the case I guess that's ok since I have been waiting a lot longer than expected anyhow. No rush anymore. So long as it doesn't stop colonizing I am good. MHbound thanks for the pointer on waiting till you see the outside colonized at 40-50% or whatever percent. That is good to know for in the future. Garbageman I wish I knew to break it up before knocking it up. My common sense function doesn't work very well. JRock1019 I hope it is not too wet. I hear only good things about TMS. NoobieShroomie I already broke it up so I hope it will be ok. So my last question is So does crumbling to early slow down colonization time? I will post another picture in like a week or two for those of you interested.

Yes, the mycelium will have to recover, but once it does the entire bag will begin to colonize.
So, from my point of view...No, I think it actually speeds things up. I would say the only downfall is mixing up any contam spores that may have entered your bag, but they would have probably already germinated by now...So, you should be fine.

MHbound I thought the filter Patch was supposed to keep contaminates out? Or does it only aide in keeping contamination out yet its not fool proof? Thanks for everyone's advice by the way! You've all been Great! And Noobieshroomie I have never got a chance do the whole grain jar thing. I tried some PF techs and they failed. Most likley human error. But when and if these bags get done doing there thing I am gonna give the PF tech a try again.
