Have my spores died?
    #9074829 - 10/14/08 06:10 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I had a syringe of mazatapec from about a year or more ago. I can't remember if I made it myself or if it was ordered, I think it was probably ordered though. Anyways, I knocked up some wbs jars Friday morning, it's now 4 days later and I haven't seen any growth yet. It's been awhile since I've grown some mushrooms but I thought they'd be well on their way colonizing now. Is it possible my spores have died or something? They were mostly just sitting in my dark closet for the past year or however long.

give it up to two weeks before giving up on them- the spores are most likely fine

germination times for mushroom spores is around 3 days .

its too early to tell, just like all the other thread with this same question.

syringes have been known to work after several years, however the older it is the less spores are viable and germinate.

It can take up to 2 weeks!

3 days is only the minimal time. 5-7 days is more realistic.

The older the spores, the more you should use.

It can take up to 2 weeks just to germinate? Is that because they're older or is that normal? I've never had em take more than 3 weeks tops to fully colonize before.

agreed - give it more time. 5 days is about the soonest I've seen growth in the PF Tek under normal conditions.

EDIT (didn't notice WBS from original post): IME WBS can be longer if the spores ended up in the center of the jar.

no, it just sometimes takes longer to show growth.

Well I'll wait it out before ordering some new spores then. I shook the jar up after inoculating it, so they should be spread around, not just in the center. That could make it slower too though maybe? If they're not concentrated in one area as much.

yep - there are probably some spores near the outside, but odds say the majority are not against the glass, so once they do germinate and start growing it'll take a bit more time to get to a visible area.

It's probably fine. Make sure temp is good (around 80F imo) and I'd bet you see something soon.
