You should probably be posting this in the mushroom cultivation forum, but i'll let the mods worry about that
If this is your first time, I suggest the PF Tek, check out the FAQ for details. While casing gives better yield, it's also more prone to contamination. As for your setup, you don't need both a humidifier and perlite, the perlite on it's own will keep it high enough. Also, an inch of standing water would be a breeding ground for contamination. Try soaking the perlite in water with a little bit of H2O2 for sterility, then drain it and put it in your terrarium. It should hold enough water to keep things wet.
The best advice I can give is to keep things simple. For my first grow, I followed the PF tek to the letter and got 6 jars colonized with no contaminations, then I put them in a rubbermaid container with an inch of dampened perlite on the bottom and did no maintenance besides a twice daily fanning for air exchange. I only got about 8 dry grams per cake when it was all said and done, but it was easy and I learned alot.

He grew on a seven foot tree
Then one day I plucked him
To roll him and smoke him
And now I can barely see!

One recomendation I`ll make is that when it comes to fanning the PR strain it needs to be done very regularly and religously. If you don`t the will eventually not mature.

Ahhh, that explains it. My buddy had two 50/50+ casing mix, started late Aug. Back then he had plenty of time to fan 2, most commonly 3 times a day and he got a first flush of around 19 g. dry. Then school grabbed his ass, and he fanned once, sometimes twice a day, his shrooms started getting wimpier and never flushed as nice, then the green took over, now they are out back in a patch of poo and straw.

You must see the PR I`m growing. I actually mailed SporeWorks about it because I still believe the strain is terribly undomesticated. I`ve been growing monster and I mean monster aborts on Dung. I used to fan 3-4 times a day, I now force myself to fan even at 11 at night. I try to fan up to 7 times a day. Now the monster aborts have started maturing which on the first flush was a huge problem. I grew about 8 massive shrooms, and all the rest aborted at this huge stage. So now that I`m fanning they all seem to be growing very big but maturing. So If you are planning on growing PR well, fan fan fan fan. Until you just plain can`t fan no more.
I got to the point where the aborts were soooo potent but they just were'nt satisfying me asthetically, now however asthetics and potency are there. So use the advice given by sporeworks and baby your PR shrooms. when you mist you casings, leave them open to absorb water and to prevent bacterial blotch. another key point to remember with PR.

Leave the lid off yourn terrarium for 20 minutes or so. Hell I fan ealry morning, then just before I go to work I fan again. I go home at lunch and fan again. Then when I get home at night I fan again And then in 1.30 minute increments after that till I go to sleep.

So do you have your terrariums in a draft free room? I ask because my buddy has his in his girlfriends spare bedroom and the draft is pretty darn strong.

DERRAYLD why don't you use a cool mist and let it run 24-7? that why they get constant air exchange.. run the air tubes outta the side of the humidifier, then tape the normal outgoing vent shut.. you can let some of the tape off to lower humidity. This is the best way for constant fresh air IMO.
Oh and another thing, this strain isn't very newbie friendly at all! I recomend starting with the B+ or Equador strain. Puerto's are a pain in the ass, they're very prone to overlay and stalling, they love to stall and abort and are best grown on dung or compost.

I grow all my mushrooms on bulk substrates in bulk tubs. So using a coolmist would mean that I`d have to humidify and regulate the entire room. So that is why I manually fan the tubs. As far as other strains go I just normally fan them 3-4 times, which really is no issue for me. Now because I`m fanning the PR they all get more air. I`ve been doing some research into converting the one half of the room into a sealed unit so that I can use a coolmist. But as yet it hasn`t really been an issue to me. Everything works so why mess with a good thing.

I'm using whole 18 gallon rubbermaids, I treat my dung casings just like normal casings with the cool mist... from reading "dudes" grow logs I have learned to lower humidity.

Like I said, I have a room of casings. I`m quite happy with what I currently do.

That`s exactly why you`d need to make descent size holes in the side of the terrarium, either filled with pollyester or covered with tyvek or MM filter disks. That way you`ll be creating positive pressure with new air being introduced while pushing out the stail air.

has anyone ever attached one of those small (computer size) fans? slap on a filter. kind of like the stealth pot growers use. or is that too drying?
