Need some insight
    #9070660 - 10/13/08 11:29 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Its been almost 2 weeks since i inoculated my mycobag and there has been like no colonization. There was just one small spot which appeared to be mycelium a few days ago and when i saw it i mashed up the bag a little to help spread but since then i have still seen nothing. For awhile the temperature was staying around 70 degrees. Just a few days ago i purchased a fish tank heater and have been using incubation which increased the humidity and temperature to about 76 degrees. It jumps around sometimes for some reason. Ive seen it up to 80 before but usually its around 75-77 degrees. Why has there been so little, if any, colonization? (im not even positive if the spot i saw was mycelium  because it was so small but it looked like the substrate in the bag was clumped together and covered with white fuzz...it could have also just been part of the substrate)

i shook up my syringe well and injected about 5cc's of Cubensis B+ spores into the mycobag. i mashed my bag before and after inoculation to assure it was spread evenly. the syringe was kept in the fridge for about a month before i used it but to my knowledge those syringes can be saved for years in the fridge.

help please...im starting to get bummed out and think that i wasted my money =[

temp is low - you want 80F or thereabouts. 76 is ok, but the lower temp is a probable reason for lack of growth. Also make sure you have gas exchange. There should be a filter patch on the bag - make sure that's not blocked. Another possibility is if you have too much moisture content in the substrate, that will slow or prevent growth all together.

I'd recommend getting some jars verm and brown rice and do the PF Tek, especially if you're new to the hobby. you'll get many instances, thus better chances for success.

The temps 75-77 is perfect. You don't need to create higher humidity outside the bag, the bag itself creates enough humidity from start to finish.

5cc's is a lot, you may have screwed up the water content. It's always better to be a little to dry then to wet, you can add water later but you can never remove it.

Other then that you did most everything correct. Did he white fuzz look more like grayish cobwebs, or pure white cotton?

I would just let it keep going and start a bunch of PF Jars as well create a few LC's, so that way even if the bag went bad you'll have plenty of chances to try again.

Where did you get the bag from and what type was it?

i couldn't exactly tell but it looked more like grayish cobwebs...i could see the brown substrate underneath but white fuzz was growing over it.

i purchased the syringe from Spores101.com
and the mycobag from Themadseason.com

the bag didn't really have a type..madseason only has one kind

Well that maybe is your problem, a non vendor. It  appears that spores101 have been shipping out alot of bad syringes. They used to be so good but since they stopped being a shroomery vendor things have went downhill.

5cc's wouldnt be enough to through the moisture content of in a bag.

i could see a ton of brown specks in the syringe so doesn't that mean that it was good?

Having to much moisture in  your bag can cause problems, mainly bacteria.

Brown specks?? where did you get your syringe. Spore clumps are black.

The mad season has great bags, but they recommend a max of 5cc's, so maybe you where pushing it a bit. I would say most likely its the spores though. Specks mean nothing if they don't germinate...

Only use shroomery sponsors, alot of people have been reporting bad syringes from spores101 recently.
