how much experience do you have using petri dishes?
i am about to buy some, but have been told on multiple occasions that I should invest in glass rather than plastic.
in your experience, is it worth it? or is the 11.2 cents per dish such a great deal because you save even with disposal after one use?

Some noob is feeding you horrible advice. Use plastic pre-sterilized petri dishes, since you can easily go through several sleeves during strain isolations. That would be several hundred bucks worth of glass, and then you have the pain in the ass of sterilizing them and trying to keep them sterile until they're poured and wrapped with parafilm. I hate glass and gave all mine away years ago. RR

I get all my perlite and verm off of ebay. For ten bucks I get 8 gallons of perlite. I also use this in the garden.

All we use in my lab is plastic. We go through at least 500 a day. It would insane to autoclave that many each day.

To date I have done a whopping 8 plates of agar .. lol
No I dont have much experience ... and I think the guys above answered your questions well.
$55 total for 500 ... 500 will last me awhile ... plus I dont like opening contamed things, I dont do it for jars, Im not going to do it for petris. Opening things that are contamed just spreads spores all over the damn place .... I just want to toss them if they are contamed and at 11 cents a piece I can.

If you decide you do want glass petris, Cynmar has them fairly cheap:
