EEG scans and REM sleep

An EEG looks no different from waking brain state and REM sleep brain state. And we spend 1/3 of hour lives asleep. babys spend about 9 hours of rem sleep everyday. Why is this so important, why is dreaming so evolutionarily important that it takes 1/3 of hour life.

our brain needs time to process the information from the other 16 hours. life is hard work man and even our organic supercomputers need a break.

I know but why is the brain state of REM sleep and wake identical? It seems like we live to sleep and we sleep to dream. And that dreaming is where whats important happens.

they're not identical, merely similar. in both states the brain is highly active.
i would love to know exactly what it is the brain is doing during this phase and why it is so necessary.

REM sleep is like a system reboot. Unless you hit REM, you wake up still feeling shitty. Of course this information has been pulled out of my ass, but it sounds like a good answer.

I have no idea how i survive sleeping like i do. I am still awake even tho i know i have to get up at 7am. Thats only 2 hours away! I have a full day ahead of me, and i just want to cry knowing how tired i will be again. Sleeping is such a waste of time.

YEH so as for EEG scans.. dont try to understand them. They say that EEG tell us brain states.. all they tell us is how synchronised the overal firing of your brain is.
In both wakefulness and REM sleep, your brain is very active and thinking all over the place, so the EEG scan will show the same thing - unsynchronised brain activity, which looks like a signal of high frequency.
EEG sucks
it fools us into thinking we have found something. All it does it measure the escaping electrical fields form your brain. Well when you look at how big those receiver nodes are, and then you consider how many individual neurons there exist in your brain in the areas between the receivers.. you realise that there is no way that the EEG scan could be detecting a meaningful signal beyond indicating the relative activity going on in generalised brain areas
