Questionable agar plates
    #9069029 - 10/13/08 12:03 AM (15 years, 4 months ago)

Hey, just a quick question.  I had a sleeve of disposable petri plates that had a rip in the top so there goes the sterility.  I taped it up when I noticed it but..  Anyways, I was pouring some plates and had some extra molten agar sitting there and figured I'd just pour them anyways and see if I get some clean ones.

I figure if I wait a week or two any contam should be noticeable?

Does everyone think this would be long enough or are some contaminates slower then that to germinate.

2 weeks is plenty. I usually see contams within 3-5 days if present.

Okay, cool. Thanks.

Something else I just thought of.  How long do you think a plate stays good for?  Not a culture, just a poured plate ready to go.
I used pre-mixed MEA from a sponsor here so I'd hope they used a lab grade agar in the mix. I wrapped then put my plates back into the sleeve they came in and sealed it.  I would figure plates would last a really long time I just don't know if they'd liquefy or dry up after a while.
