Stabilizing Mushroom Strains
    #9066569 - 10/12/08 12:51 PM (15 years, 5 months ago)

I've got a question that may have an obvious answer.  How does one stabilize a mushroom strain?  How long does it take to do that?

i have no idea how LONG it can take to do it but i believe the best way is strain isolation...perform some search. You can achieve the traits you want this want and create a master slant that will last you a long time. Grow your favorite mushies forever! (well practically that is!;))

oh, my bad...i figured agar would be a great way to stabilize a strain but didn't research this. hopefully his question gets answered for him as well as me

i may have mis understood the question. if he does mean how long does it take to acheive an isolate on agar. then i dont think there is an easy answer for how many transfers it takes. im sure if you clone a fast growing pin to agar and watch the mycelium sector, and isolate those substrains. = you can skip some transfers. hmmmm i wander if he means by stabilize a strain? domesticate? like most strains of cubensis have been taken from outdoors and domesticated\stabilized? sorry for that previous post. im rather confused now.

If you're careful in selecting the mushrooms you use for taking sporeprints, four to six generations.

Sorry, but I was deliberately vague because I didn’t want to influence people’s responses.  People have often used the term “stabilize” in reference to manipulating the characteristics of an isolated wild-type strain.  For example when one isolates a mushroom strain from the wild, it’s often referred to as the wild type.  The wild type mushroom often is said to have traits that vary considerably.  Before a strain is put out for sale, it’s often said to be “stabilized.”  When used in this context I believe “stabilized” means that the wild type strain is inbred through several generations to minimize the variability it expresses thereby “stabilizing” its genetic traits.

Does this make sense to anyone?  If so, could you confirm if this is what stabilizing a mushroom strain means?

haha stabilize = domesticate. i dont know of other situations where the term stabilize would fit when talking about a strain.

I have done this, and it took me about 7 months in total to do so.
Like RR said you have to pick and choose the best fruits to take prints from, grow out and start all over again.
here are some examples from my endeavour for you.
The first print... Wild

Here is the first flush from said print, and yes this was a multispore inoculation

Heres the first and second flush harvests side by side

heres the possible variations, up side down mushroom

and as the genetics began to stabilize some...

and in the end of the 6th generation, this is what I was getting.

hope that helps some

Thanks a bundle.  Great photos!!!  That answers a lot of my questions.  I can clearly see why stabilized strains are sold at such a higher price.  It clearly is a lot of work.
