can a FULL HD lcd tv replace a computer monitor ?

in terms of stuff looking good on it ?
see the problem is that my laptop does not feature a HD OUT, i just got the normal vga out i think it is called BUT i can hook any computer monitor to it and it looks allright.
seeing that the new lcd tvs basically are not that much different from a pc monitor, i wonder if i can actually hook one to it and get the same quality of resolution i had if i were to buy a "computer lcd monitor"
full hd resolution is 1920x1080 pixels which offers quite some display, please let me know if i am correct as i would also use it at "normal computer monitor distance" which is not too far from it.

You will have fun getting some applications to work properly in 1920x1080.

It would be pimp shit son.
I have my HD LCD hooked up via VGA right now, and its the shiznizzle. I am only running at 1380x768 though, so I am getting worse resolution than my 22" LCD monitor. Kinda a shitty deal for workspace, because my audio sequencer has so much "fixed" display, and the dynamic content area is pretty small after everything is said and done.
I have two monitors though, so it works out. It is a godsend for watching video and browsing the net. I get headaches on the computer usually, not now.
1920x1080 is going to be some seriously gangster shit. Do it now!

You might want to sit a bit further back than that, because otherwise you'll be turning your head all the time to look across your desktop! Also, the pixels will be bigger than those on computer monitors. But it should still be okay.

I hook my 5 year old powerbook up to my 42" LG 720p TV all the time and it looks great. I run it at 1024x768 for movies and downloaded tv shows and it works fine.

Yeah but would you use it as your primary monitor for web browsing and word processing?

I use a 42" 1080p tv hooked up through HDMI as my monitor. I used to use a 27" 720p and it looked great to, Ive never had a problem. Id suggest DVI/HDMI as VGA is a little blurry.

That'll make edges a bit blurrier. Again, it'll be fine for movies but not for reading text.

Yep, DVI-HDMI is the best way to go. I get a full 1080p signal from the video card to the TV with 1920x1080 resolution. It's a beautiful thing.
My setup now is two 22inch monitors and my 42 inch above it. Pretty gnarly.
And ohm, obviously the bigger tv you get the further back you're going to have to sit. In my setup I just use my tv as a "throw-away window", meaning I just throw stuff to that monitor that I'm not using. I sometimes read PDFs from it too as it's relaxing to sit back and read an article. VGA signal is kind of missing the point of HDTV.
This pic is from when I was still combining my home theater with my computer:
And here is the tv playing Winamps Milkdrop. It's cool.

Hell yeah man. DVI-HDMI is the exact same video signal. I then run a SPDIF cord from the back of the soundcard into the coax digital input in the back of the receiver. So when I download HD-DVDs or Blu-ray's with the x264 compression, I still get a GORGEOUS picture plus whatever the sound is, DTS or Dolby Digital.
I eventually want to get a receiver that's got 3-4 HDMI inputs so I can get rid of all these cords and use the receiver basically as a HDMI switcher, since HDMI has both digital sound and video in the same cord.

i totally understand, so i would now have to look into providing an EXTERNAL DVI device for my laptop.
the question is if the signal coming from that thing, i found units that appear to be installed through the usb port and are a DVI grafics card, is any good.
like if it is a "true DVI signal" or just some mumbo jumbo shit.
because if those are legit, im down, may cost me a bit more but i tried it over the VGA cable yesterday and man was i disappointed !

Yeah, my TV has a VGA port on it and I hooked one of my monitors up that way, like you said, not good, was dissapointed. Then went and got that DVI-HDMI cable and my computer now even recognizes the TV as in HDTV, in the Hardware section of Control Panel, pretty cool.

Yeah I'm a bit suss on those USB video cards. They must use a lot of your CPU.
In theory you should be able to get a graphics card to go in the Expresscard slot of your laptop, but I've never ever seen one for sale. If you have PCMCIA instead of Expresscard you're out of luck. In fact I think you're generally out of luck and might have to consider getting a proper monitor

i have both pcmcia and the new pcmcia express or whatever if is called.
i mailed a company that produces these external cards and they claim that their adapter supports up to 1920x1200 on DVI on a rahter wack system.
only SUPER downside, it requires windows to run ...
