this is how it looks so far...
i inoculated this lot on 25/9, two of them are b (the ones with most growth) and the other three are equador's. i had them in my bedroom for about a week n a half but not much was happening so i moved them to the hot press where they have came on leaps and bounds, so hopefully not long now....
so how do they look to the trained eye ??
the top two are b+ the bottom equador's
the two on the left are the b+
my unprepared fc, i plan on using the shotgun tec
let me know wot u think....
-------------------- next time i order a pizza i'm gonna ask them to cut it into 6 slices instead of 8, because i was'nt fit for 8 the last time !!

i need some clarification on this:
after inoculation do i put tape on the innoc holes or just leave them open ??
this is a pic of the lid i have on my jar, is that a breathable strip across it that it came with or should i remove the tape from the holes??

if that tape didnt come with a label, dont trust it... do a quick search for micro pore tape, and you'll find out the following::
It is very cheap - apx 2$ for a roll It can be found at walgreens or any store that sells bandaids Make sure the LABEL says SOMEWHERE on there "micropore" tape and that it is breathable. =)
Good luck man... and next time, do a quick search for your question in the upper right hand corner... Chances are your 'searching' would be quicker then typing up a post.

If you have a dry verm layer, you dont need tape over your holes. But since you got pre prepared substrate jars, i dont know if they have that or not.
micropore tape is a medical tape thats breathable, use 2 strips on each inoc hole. Unsure if that stuff is breathable or not.
IMO that substrate looks poorly made and to moist. do you know whats in it? verm and brown rice flour?

sorry i no the stuff now, its called surgical tape over here. but cheers for the clarification.
it is a basic starters grow kit i purchased. ingredients as follows: Ingredients
Contents: 1,3 liter vermiculite 220 gram rice flour 5 filter boxes 325 ml. 3 small filter bags 1 pair of sterile gloves sterile mask 1 spore syringe psilocybe cubensis 'Equador' manual
and that is how i prepared it. i see now on second looking it says filter boxes so i am guessing it is breathable ?? but i still do have the holes taped over.
is to moist a problem ??

Just go to any pharmacy go to the band-aid section and go find the stuff that looks like regular tape. It is called Nexcar by 3M and it is gentle paper tape ie Micropore tape.

To much moisture can cause slow growth. and other problems like wetrot. I can also see alot of brownrice flour sticking to the sides of the tub, which may be hard to colinse.
Looks like the verm and flour was mixed first then the water added last. This doesnt coat the verm well with flour and can leave clumps of flour like that.
Verm and water should be mixed first, get to field capacity then add the flour so it coats all the vermiculite evenly.
www.mushroomvideos.com and watch the pf tek videos. No more kits needed.
BRF verm substrates are so easy to make up yourself.

Might be too many holes. You'll have to put your 4" of wet perlite in and see what your hygrometer tells you after a few hours. If it's low, you can tape some up.

I beg to differ. I used to run a rice detailing business in Korea. Those Koreans like their rice, and they like it shiny.

i have already 2 quart jars of b+ and 3 of Ecuador inoculated, the b+ is nearly fully colonized but for a bit in the bottom & the ecuador's are not far behind.
so i decided to do 7 more. 2 more b+ and the other 5 ecuador's. i have to tell you that the anticipation i am feeling to all this is unmeasurable (all going according to plan)
i really cannot wait to see my first pins.....
my latest batch b4 sterilization

IME, light is a minor issue - not nearly as important ad FAE or humidity and others. In nature, shrooms typically grow in dark areas under bushes and trees and such so even on the longest, sunniest days they don't get that much light. IME few hours a day is more than enough. As I understand it - might be wrong or incomplete - the light tells the myc it's reached the surface and it's now time to start growing pins. Light is definitely not needed to grow like with plants.
I'd say if you can see the substrate your lighting is adequate. There are probably things you can do to make it better, but I wouldn't sweat it.

i have just had a look at my 1st batch of cakes, they seem to be shrinking ??
is this shrinkage normal ?? it is nearly colonized but for a bit on the bottom, but do i have anything to worry about with the shrinkage ??
