I'll use the strain discussion thread as an example, I would guess most people don't go to the strain discussion thread at all, its basically there to put the questions out of sight, and out of mind.
Do you really want to do this for questions that newbies to mushroom growing might have? This would cause a lot of discouragement if they had to search through a garbage thread.
There is already an emphasis on the search function, and if the newbies don't use it, I think it would just be best to ignore the questions if found annoying by some other users.
A forum is for discussion, i think people should be able to ask questions openly that wouldn't be answerable just by looking at a static document.
I do know there are a lot of stupid questions asked on this forum repeatedly, but I just choose to ignore them if they are obnoxiously stupid, and just read the threads that interest me.
I think better alternatives then to making a static thread, is to either make a better newbie growing guide, another FAQ, or perhaps a sub forum titled (Beginners Mushroom Cultivation).
Besides, a lot of the information that would be available in this thread would be readily available in the cultivation guides.
Wow,way to put it to him.I COMPLETELY agree with you, when I first saw the thread,I was already thinking"damn, here we go again"..one more thread to throw all types of nnobish questions into. Why do this, when you have the general growing forum?I mean, whos to dicide whether someone is a noob,or someone who has a few grows on their belts, but is still learning??
Its safe to say,EVERYONE here can still learn one thing about mycology, except maybe RR..but thats besides the point.I think the "nnob"thread is bullshit, for lack of a better word.
It will simply doscourage newbies to post questions,in fear that it wil end up in this bullshit forum!!
I wish one can ask questions about strains in the normal forum.but as soon as one does,it goes straight to the "gRAVEYARD"....

using 1 small piece of WBS could earn you a good LC, but the chances of contaminating it are too great without a flowhood.
I would try a mycelium water tek once its fully colonized and use that to make your LC's
The first statement was more of an intro as to where I am at as far as cultivation, not so much a question. Thanks for your answer .

Well I decide your a noob for posting crap in here, let the thread help people and that's it, its here to help not to cause trouble
Why do people always have to pick on everything, its people like you who make this place full of waste and crap, its why your posts go to the gRAVEYARD, if you got a problem do it in PM why clutter up the thread
why is the thread is here hmmmmmmm go search Dunk and roll you will find 1000 threads asking how do I dunk and roll and another 1000 on light and more on types of verm which should I use fine or coarse, I believe this thread will stop all that stuff to make it a more better place for the future, just go have a look in mush cult about drying mushrooms about 20 people asked the same question the same day within 8 hours, this thread may stop that and unclog it.

Tripchip left a good link here to a Mycelium water tek, or you can find the same in the first post of this thread.
ATM I have a bit going on and am too lazy to link you myself at this point.
Heya Juke, and thanks for chiming in. I know your one of the ones that would jump in and help in this thread

For us noobs who went straight for bulk grow, a 10lb bag of penningtons wild bird seed will make 10 quart jars 3/4 full after removing the dead seeds. This is good for us noobs on a tight budget. Sometimes we just have to buy the bare minimum in tough times!

Another suggestions for us noobies:
If you plan to bulk grow, either use a mono tub or go straight into a greenhouse. Greenhouse is automated with a coolmist humidifier and/or ultrasonic humidifier. Check this link out for the Automated Greenhouse..
You can find your greenhouse at Target for $40 + shipping or from this guy on eBay selling for $29.99 including shipping (he must of got his hands on a huge lot of these). Fill your greenhouse with one or two trays to 6-10 or more (depending on size). Greenhouses seem to be perfect because if you want to grow HUGE you can, want just a few trays, just as good.

I would suggest the Monotub for the noobs more so than the greenhouse which is a trial and error sort of deal with the Environmental conditions and all. the Mono is a more set it and forget type of deal.

Hmm, well I will be in for an interesting first time then . Maybe I will just stick my first tray in my mono just so I can get shrooms. But for the other 10 jars of WBS that are being PC'd, I have other plans

I still consider myself a noob. I'm starting my third grow and found a middle ground between cakes and bulk. I use a double-tub shotgun capable of holding 6 6-Qt bulk sub trays. I had the shotgun from the first grow with cakes and several other tubs of the same size and style, and better than half of my gigantic bag of perlite. This allowed me to go bulk with no humidifiers, greenhouses, or fear of contam loss in a mono tub (my sterile tech is good, but imo one lost tray of 2 spawn jars is better than a full tub of 10 jars).

I started some jars two weeks ago today, and I keep them in an incubator at 81F. Half of them are almost completely colonized, while the other half only have 2 or 3 inoculation points germinated with mycelium growth about the size of a nickel. I read in another thread this could be because the substrate is too wet, or because microscopic bacteria are stopping the mycelium from growing. Since I don't have a PC, I've been steam sterilizing in a pot. Could I steam sterilize for 90 minutes and then do it again 24 hours later to make sure I kill the bacteria?
Please don't just tell me to buy a PC, trust me it is on my to do list already but I can't afford one right now.

Make new jars and start again, if those jars are contaminated steaming them again will do nothing.

I was talking to Oatman2000 for some advice and he was suggesting not to use the tank-in-tank incubation. Stale water, multiple heating zones, a perfect place for contams. With the water setup it creates a lot of moisture and it is noticeable on the outside of the jars. I hooked up a personal room heater with tin foil to my dresser drawers to keep 75-78 degrees and they are colonizing just as fast as my TiT did while not worrying too much about rH and not having to worry about varying temps. Just another idea I ran into. Plenty of people use TiT's with no problem but I just lost a jar to trich! So in the sterilized drawer they went! Also I have a walk in closet in my new place which will be turned into my fruiting/incubating/inoculation closet.
