Is there another way to grow shrooms without Vermiculite?

Its quite impossible over here to find vermiculite anywhere (south texas), whether it may be pure or just mixed in with peatmoss/soil. Checked walmart, home depot, HEB, what not and found nothing. I know there are some sites where one can purchase Vermiculite but I just need something less than 15 bucks, or an alternative way to grow mushrooms without vermiculite. All the equipment I have is set, just need that last item to start cultivating.

I already got the brown rice though. I was wondering if I could mix it with something else that imitates vermiculite or something just as good, just to balance the 250ml jar ratio.

There are many ways to grow mushrooms. I have some Agaricus Bisporus growing on pasteurized compost and manure and cased with peat/calcium carbonate.
Dealing with finding vermiculite, if you cannot find it in town, order it online. Mycosupply has it. http://www.mycosupply.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?preadd=action&key=VERM01

I don't think so, but then again I do not own them or work with them You could contact them and ask them about shipping times/rates, they are a sponsor on the board.

Vermiculite and Perlite can be found at nearly any plant nursery or hydroponics store. Hardware stores also carry it. Boycott walmart. RR

I highly doubt that there's no vermiculite where you live. Try yellowpages.com, and search keyword "garden". You'll get a list of small garden businesses you never knew existed. Support your local garden centres; places like Home Depot, Walmart, just kill local businesses

I would have to agree with Iamsmooth, the only place I found vermiculite was in a small nursery and I live in AK.

Search for a pet store that has stuff for lizards, frogs... Vermiculite is used as a bedding for reptile eggs I also had trouble finding it anywhere else.

Ialso have no verm but that hasn't stopped me. First time i used straight grain as a substrate cased with pasteurized potting soil . Next i moved to straw/cow shit and a lil straw log. They both worked and i used potting soil to case the straw/shit mix. Hope this helps
