PNW - Amanita v. Formosa? ID Please!

Hey, I found some amanitas in a park near a highway in town, found a couple of these guys growing in the shade of a pine tree. I'm drying one in the oven now, and while I dry it, I thought I'd ID it, in case I misidentified it.
Habitat: In the grass, near a young pine tree.
Gills: White, free.
Stem: relatively thick, white, bulbous "root," about 2-3 inches long
Cap: roughly 5-6", light yellow, becoming orange toward the top of the cap, with white warts dotting the cap. Slightly tacky when damp.
Spore print color: White.
Bruising: No noticeable bruising.
Smell: Smell while drying is... stinky. Smell before drying, didn't check.

So, is this indeed a formosa? Or one of the evil killer lookalikes?

We would need clearer pictures of the base to be sure, but it does look like a Formosa.
One of the tell-tale signs of a Formosa/Guessowii is that it has a pretty shaggy stem, and rings at the bottom of it. I would say it's probably one though. And as far as deadly look alikes, there aren't any that look THAT much like a Formosa and also pose the threat of being deadly.

Great post. I completely agree.
I guess the correct name at this time is Amanita muscaria var. guessowii.

Sweet... so how potent can the effects of a formosa be? I'm not expecting a Golden Teacher massive experience, or even the same kind of experience as with a siberian muscaria, but can I expect at least the usual dreamy euphoric sort of experience? I'm still continuing my hunt for cyans and libs, but I'll try whatever I can find... that won't cause massive crushing organ failure. I like my organs! :P

Hmmm I'm not an expert on these. Try using the search engine for posts by falcon. I think he posted something about some method and explained it pretty well. I have a small collection I made this year but I'm not going to try them.

Well, I tried a small bite of the dried mushroom, just to check and see what happens... nothing so far. Not feeling any negative effects, so tomorrow (unless something unexpected happens), I'm gonna go out into the woods with a friend, and eat the rest (with a little honey!)

Please keep us informed. I'm nervous whenever anyone eats a mushroom from this genus.

I'll post whatever info I can, after this is all over :P Right now I'm a little sweaty and warm. I'm gonna give my friend a pic of the mushroom I picked, with its name written on it, so if the worst DOES happen, she can call 911, and they can positively ID it immediately. It'll be an interesting experience, whatever the case. :P Anyway, I'm feeling kinda sleepy, so I'll see you all later, and let you know how it goes!

Hopefully he'll sleep better than I will with a post like that.
God damn it. I hate worrying.

Sorry to get you worried, man. I'm just taking extra precautions, in the event of the unforeseen... I read plenty of reports of trips gone bad because they tripped for the wrong reason, or missed some necessary thing that sent them into a downward spiral.
I wish I could sleep... I adapted my sleep patterns over the course of several months to be super late nights, sleep into afternoons. With my laptop out of commission for the moment, I have no reason to stay up late.
Status update:
Woke up at 2:49 to discover that where my alarm clock had been had been briefly replaced by a misty red blur, which slowly resolved itself into numbers. When I focused on it, the effect went away, although for some minutes the numbers would merge and create trails, then resolve again. The coldness & sweatiness I felt earlier is gone, along with the vague tremblings. I feel pretty normal, although my perception of light and colour is somewhat enhanced.
In general the effects seem pretty mild with a low dose. I don't feel nauseous, or have pains anywhere, so I assume I haven't been poisoned. :P
Well, I'm gonna head back to bed, and see what else crops up. I'll post further status updates if anything new happens, and after I test the rest of the cap later in the afternoon, I'll write up a little trip report.
Have a good day, gang!

I have to say that I don't think you guys should be as nervous as you are. Amanita Muscaria var Guessowii is a very common mushroom, and is pretty easy to identify. Personally I've eaten them many times with the only unpleasant side-effect being nausea. I would say dry out a nice cap and grind up half of it and make a tea from it, you'll definitely be feeling nice from that. I love a good ol' cup of Guessowii tea, especially when I'm in a down mood, brings me right up and makes me feel really nice and dreamy. Also, another interesting way to try Guessowii is in a tea at night, before sleeping, it REALLY enhances dreams and can help with OBE's and the like.
Happy Shrooming! Be sure to keep us updated of your adventures! I've honestly got tons of this mushroom frozen for storage! ;-)

My current status as of 10:58 am, after taking the single test bite @ 6:57 pm yesterday... perfectly normal. Kinda cold, but, that's WA for ya. I put the rest of the mushroom in a ziplock bag in the freezer (dried of course), and I'm gonna try the rest this afternoon with my friend, as I said. The increased awareness of light and colour, and the red mist that was my alarm clock aside, I noticed nothing major. I look forward to my time after work, when I try the rest, and perhaps experience something more interesting. Thanks for your comments and support, guys! I'll post a trip report later, to document my adventure!

Status update, 11:49 pm: took most of the cap at 2:40 pm. didn't eat the very center, but everything else. Vague nausea here and there, and an overall feeling of drunkenness. The drunk feeling still persists, although it's pretty weak. No visual distortions, dreamy feelings, etc. Took several naps earlier, which were often punctuated by my dad wandering by and asking me something. Otherwise, I feel pretty normal. Maybe I need a deeper sleep to experience anything more interesting.

Thank you for the update.
This genus isn't to be played with unless you are 1000% sure and even then you have to be careful if you haven't had them before. I would never try it without a guide. Being nonchalant about these isn't bravery, more like stupidity.
I'm glad you're ok.
