First bulk sub grow results: Rye -> Coir -> Monotub -> 1st flush dry weight 143.6g 2

This is my first bulk grow, and not a complete grow log. I just started taking pics like 3 days ago.
I used a microwave Karo B+ strain LC (which I almost threw away!), to 6 quarts of rye, spawned to coir, cased with 50/50 (1/2"), and fruited in a monotub.
Mom & Dad
2 days before harvest
1 day before harvest
Harvest day
Harvest
What I'm fan drying because all 4 trays of my dehydrator are stuffed
I don't know how much this weighs, but it is an assload of shrooms. I was a little disappointed that I didn't have one of those beautiful full canopies of perfect caps, but I've got nothing to complain about. This is more shrooms than I know what to do with.
A couple things I learned from this time: 1> Use a garbage can liner around substrate to prevent sidepinning. I got too excited when I was doing this and totally forgot this step. Luckily it isn't really a vital step, just a housekeeping step in my opinion. I had a ton of sidepinning and I assume this resulted in less pins on top, and it was a definite pain at harvest time.
2> I think it's probably important to have a nice level substrate, which I did not. I think this would have given me a better pinset, but again, I'm thrilled with my results.
Update 10/10/08: 1st flush cracker dry weight: 143.6 grams or 5.06 oz.
Thanks for checking out my post. Questions and comments are welcome! Happy mycologizing!

I used large_dose's How i pasteurize coir in bulk Tek, which uses this recipe:
4.5 quarts water 1 brick coir 1 quart coffee 1 quart verm
I highly recommend this tek. It's very easy. I even used the same Lowe's bucket. Coir can be messy, but I imagine every sub can be messy.

Yup. It's dunking now. I filled the tub up with until it almost reached the bottom vent holes. The I put a large roasting pan on top of the sub, then put a cast iron griddle in the roasting pan to weigh it down. Worked great.

I give credit to large_dose's coir tek (see above) for the moisture content. For the 50/50 casing, I just used tap water to get it to field capacity. I didn't even pasteurize it.

Twist when you pull those suckers out! You're ripping a lot of your sub out when you harvest. Minimizing this will help future flushes, as the mycelium expends less energy recovering.
Excellent flush though.

Good Job Especially for your first .
An even sub level will help to a more even casing depth and hence will help with a more even pinset .
Enjoy

Thanks. I'm sure you're completely right, but i was trying to hurry and it's not easy twisting a big cluster when they're kind of tangled with other shrooms. I'm sure I'll do better next time.

I used 1/2" 50/50 casing layer, put back in the dark for I think a week, but maybe less... Patched, back in the dark for a day. Patched then fruited. Fruiting was just in a room with light 12/12 and a fan in the room.

Update 10/10/08: 1st flush cracker dry weight: 143.6 grams or 5.06 oz.
It might have been better if I had a better harvesting technique. It was a real hassle cleaning them- a lot more than I would have liked went in the trash. Probably not a huge difference, but you hate to see your baby boys get circumcised.

Looking good man I used your tek last night to start a new montub the only difference is I don't have a fancy 3 gallon bucket so I used a mop bucket with a foil lid and a hole punched in the foil.. Thanks again for the easy tek.. Ohh yeah I didn't add coffee only cause there is none in my household..

Thank you guys.
Damion5050, you can usually get a huge bag of spent coffee grounds at Starbucks. They often have it just sitting in a bucket in front of the counter to take, already bagged up. When I went in, the bucket was empty, so I just asked, and they handed me a bag; all free.
And just for the record the tek is large_dose's. I know you didn't mean my tek literally, but I just like to give credit where it's due.
You guys have a good weekend! I'm hoping to get my canoe on the river again before it snows!

Garden compost is what most use it for and what they assume. No questions. Most people don't think there's anything sinister about used coffee grounds!
No need to dry it out. You're just going to get it wet, anyway! Read over the tek again. Peace!

No, not really, if they do ask just say its for your garden, which is what they are expecting. And, no, if you plan to use your coffee grounds immediately there is no reason to dry them out. Oh, and if they don't have any by the door, ask the people behind the counter.

Here is a copy of the tek.. You can't access it on your own cause you are a new member but, I just copied and pasted it...
Figured I'd share how i bulk pasteurize coir You could cook/spawn 10 bricks in a day... easily.
You need to go to Lowe's and get their 3.5 gal buckets and a lid. (These are extremely high quality buckets with easy grip handles i like them because liter and quart measurements are listed in increments all the way up each side of the bucket.)
I used the following recipe per bucket: 4.5 quarts water 1 brick coir 1 quart coffee 1 quart verm It came out to an avg 10 liters per bucket (almost 3 gallons)
Here are the exact steps i take: 1. Heat water up to 170 in PC 2. Throw in coir - let it expand for 5 minutes Keep the lid off 3. Throw in the coffee/verm - mix it all together real good 4. Close lid on PC - set it on high for 5 minutes The substrate will heat up to about 195-200 5. Turn off the stove - remove PC lid 6. Dump substrate into one of the buckets - cover - let cool Repeat steps 1 - 6 for each brick
I put a small hole 1/4'' in the middle of my bucket lid w/ polyfil so it can breathe. The polyfil is overkill, oh well - i like insurance.
With a long-stem thermometer it easily stayed above 175 in all buckets for over an hour, all the buckets cooled in 6-8 hours.

How big is that tub? 66 qt? i see you have 2 holes on each long side (2 inch or so?), and one on the top of each small side... are they covered with tyvek or what is that?... i planned on using polyfill but have no experience with it, if this would be easier im game.

Oh, by the way, I forgot to mention - having a nice pinset over the entire surface is sometimes LESS desirable, IMO - as long as the pinset isn't a result of stress or lack of nutrients. The mycelium is going to use up its available nutrients, water and fressh air one way or another - whether it be in smaller numbers of larger fruits, or in larger numbers of smaller fruits.
Larger fruits are less work! I HATE having to clean the casing off of thousands of teeny little fruits.

Um...;) okay but what about the first part of my question... tub size...hole size... i know its "to each his own choice, tune to your preferred results", but im asking for your specific setup how big were they and how big is the tub.

Polyfil > micropore (for fruiting.) You need FAE much more than you need sterility. If you use micropore to keep contaminants out during the bulk spawn colonization process, then I'd suggest replacing it with polyfil once you wish to initiate pinning, as well as fanning often.

The holes are slightly bigger than a quarter. I used a small holesaw drill bit.
I don't recall the quart size of the tub, I'm pretty bad with stuff like that. If you look at the first few pics there are items included for scale, including a ruler in one. Maybe that will help you. Sorry. I knew when I started. Maybe 64 qt?

Man, it's hard for me to believe that more air would be exchanged with polyfil than micropore tape. It just seems like a much thicker barrier. Besides, the micropore tape worked fine for me, and it's simpler and tidier. As far as fanning goes, I like the monotub for it's simplicity and the ability to set it and forget it. Fanning may be beneficial, but it works well without it. Fanning would mess with the RH, too, and I just don't want the complication. If this is as good as it gets without fanning, I'm happy. But I do think I can make a major improvement by utilizing the trash bag technique, and making sure the substrate is level.
Thanks for your thoughts.

That's the beauty of monotubs and dubtubs. You don't have to do anything for humidification. do a search on monotubs and all will be revealed to you.

You really don't have to do anything if you have the proper moisture content.. Cause the water evaporates out of the substrate and creates water droplets on the inside of the tub, which have to were to go so they just fall back to the surface of the substrate.. So no misting required..

2nd flush dry weight is only 52.2 due to an unfortunate Trich contam which took out about half the tub. I'm guessing this is from my absolutely laissez-faire methods of harvest and dunking at the first flush.
Oh well. 7 ounces is a lot of mushrooms for me, and this experience has certainly pointed me to where I need to make improvements next time.

What size fan did you have going in the room? Was it on 24/7 or on a timer?
Did you have it ocillating so it blew past the tub or just blowing in one direction?

That's a real nice grow, props to you. How much would you say you had total substrate (spawn + bulk) by volume? I'd like to know what it takes to get 1.4kg shrooms with one flush..

The fan is probably a 20" floor fan that was going mostly 24 hours a day on low, not oscillating, not pointing at the tub.

I guess I can't really provide much in the way of supporting evidence but I tend to agree with you about micropores role in monotub FAE.
I've got 6 quarts of WBS that will soon become my first monotub. I'm going to use the same bulk sub you used. FAE was the main thing I was worrying about but now im feeling good. your harvest speaks for itself man.
