Ive just moved to germany for a bit to study, and its a strange experience.

I have to say, Im a bit disappointed. Im a pretty open guy and I was hoping to find the "cold" german rumours to be false. However, the majority of German people I meet here, including other students, have little interest in being your friend. The majority of people I socialise with, are from the UK, South America or other European countries.

Why is this?! The people are not nasty. They are just not very open, and I find this sad. The sense of humour thing is extremely annoying!! Where I'm from, we make jokes all the time. Here, you make a joke and they presume youve made a mistake, and they try to correct your "Deutsch". Lighten Up you miserable fukers!

Does anyone else have similar experiences?

Im not bashing, Im just dissappointed

moved to germany in 99 and had the same thing happen to me... it gets better over time, though, especially once you get to know some people better... germans have a strong sense of boundary if they dont know you that well...
what city do you live in, if i might ask... people are pretty different depending on the place you're at...

I've lived in Germany for 10 years. I'm from Munich and the people there are actually very open, active, and fun outdoor people. It really does depends on the region you live in. Berlin is a whole different feel for example, same if you're out in the country side.

Solution: Drink beer. Germans love beer. They'll pour their hearts out to you on beer.

I have been to Germany once, in Munich and Stuttgart. Both cities the people were very nice and friendly, the people I ran into seemed more friendly than English people I met in that same trip.

I have been living in Germany all my life and I think you are absolutely right. Socializing is not a german art i guess. I have been to the USA a few times and the people there are ridiculously open compared to Germans, starting a conversation with a complete stranger seemed totally normal there.

But I guess I am guilty of that myself: When a stranger approaches me here in Germany, I usually straight ask: "OK, how much money do you want?" And 9 out of ten times they really only want money (to buy drugs and alcohol or stuff). Here in Germany you dont really make friends on the street, at least in my experience.

edit: damn, drugs and alcohol are the same, of course.

learn the culture. work on communication skills. it comes with the territory. befriending a foreigner isn't topping the list of people's priorities... especially when you have to suffer through horrible accents and translations. good luck!

You just have to get to know them a bit longer before they open up.

They're definitely a very rigid people, but, as previously mentioned, the barriers come down once they get to know you better.
