I've just went through my 4th rubber ring in 6 months. My p.c. is a mirro 8qt,i bought it myself so i know how much it's been used.I always soak my ring in hot water for 15min and always oil it lightly with cooking oil.I've only use it about 2 times a month, with 24 jars.So it's on until all the jars are done.Does everyone go through this many rings or should i change doing all my jars in 1 night?

Vegetable oil "eats" rubber, don?t use it with the seal. If you feel the need to treat the seal, use vaseline.

(and before anyone jums on this, please inform you before doing so, rubber is NOT latex, latex is dissolved by vaseline but not by vegetable oil...)

You should just use warm soapy water to clean the ring of food and OILS after each use and before storage. Your ring should definately last longer than that so it probably is the oil deterioating it. You are only supposed to use oil for the first one or two uses of a new gasket. Excessive use will swell the gasket and it won't fit right.

Thanks to all for the input,as soon as i dried the ring it came back to life.I knew i should've kept my old rings.I think the oil made it slip through the slot on the side of the lid.I bet i bought more rings in 6 months then the hardwear store has sold in 6 years.I wonder why department stores sell pressure cookers but not extra parts?I live in a city and every place here does'nt have anything but the cooker itself, the only places are the hardwear stores. Is it same everywhere else?
